Do you want to develop your research skills whilst continuing to work as an autonomous practitioner for a leading specialist eye hospital? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated Research Orthoptist to join our team at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful applicant would be supporting the principal investigator, also an Orthoptist, to project manage all elements of a funded paediatric research study. The fixed term post is for 18 months. We welcome applicants who would be interested in full-time or part-time working hours.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant would be working with a multi-disciplinary clinical and research team within the Paediatric Clinical Trials unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
The post holder will work closely with the principal investigator, clinical and research teams to co-ordinate and deliver research within the Paediatric Clinical Trials unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital. The post holder will deliver a high standard of clinical care and be able to work as an independent autonomous practitioner.
Research specific duties include:
- To be responsible for co-ordinating and delivering research trials within the Paediatric Clinical Trials unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
- Undertake the screening, identification, and recruitment of eligible participants to relevant trials according to trial protocol and organisation SOPs.
- Provide relevant information to prospective participants and taking of informed consent (and assent where appropriate).
- Deliver a high standard of clinical care while adhering to research protocol for all patients eligible for and recruited to clinical trials.
- Adhere to the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
- Manage the clinical trial documentation including maintenance of site file(s).
- Provide orthoptic support, where necessary, to clinical trials within Moorfields Clinical Research Facility.
- Act as research contact regarding paediatric clinical trials for both patients and the wider clinical team.
- Maintain good and open communication with the clinical team to facilitate the identification and recruitment of potentially eligible participants.
- Maintain accurate and detailed record keeping in format adhering to trial protocol and local SOPs.
- Present research findings at relevant scientific meetings. Provide orthoptic input to the development of protocols and grant applications.
- Network with other researchers and build collaboration. Facilitate effective communication of research study information with all relevant research teams.
- Have a high level of computer literacy and basic programming.
- Support orthoptists and other members of the clinical team in their roles in clinical research.
- Support and encourage engagement with clinical research.
- Provide discharge and follow-up advice.

Essential
- Recognised HCPC diploma or degree in Orthoptics
- HCPC registration
- Postgraduate qualification
Desirable
- GCP certification
- Research project design and fulfilment as part of further qualification
Experience
Essential
- Experience in orthoptic NHS setting, involving specialist clinics
- Experience of diagnosis and management of complex ocular motility disorders
- Previous research experience (clinical research preferred)
- High level of computer literacy including MS Word, Excel
- Programming skills
Desirable
- Experience in participating in recruitment and taking of informed consent
- Experience of working with electronic patient records
Knowledge
Essential
- Awareness of statistical processes and understanding of statistical outputs
- Knowledge of research study set up and design (e.g. protocol, patient information etc)
Desirable
- Previous experience performing basic statistics e.g. using Excel or specific data analysis package
- Previous experience in research study design and production of patient-facing materials
