Job description

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant for a part-time (0.2 FTE), fixed term contract until the 30 March 2026.

About The Role

Climate change threatens historic cities globally, with adverse or evolving environmental conditions posing risks to heritage buildings. This drives the need for architectural and conservation management strategies to safeguard the tangible and intangible value embodied in our architectural heritage assets.

Therefore, the goal of this project is two-fold: To investigate evidence-gaps for effective climate-resilience management strategies for heritage buildings and to collaborate with stakeholders and community groups in two UNESCO world heritage cities – Bath, UK, and As-Salt, Jordan to co-create Indigenous knowledge and policies to improve heritage resilience management in a manner that is actionable, scalable and effective.

This role will support academic and expert teams in Bath (working remotely with the Amman team) to undertake literature/ desk reviews, case study analyses, workshops and fieldwork, and other tasks to support the UK-Jordan research/policy exchange.

As a member of Research Staff at the University of Bath, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position.

This role will suit a researcher or practitioner with strong interest and/or expertise in architectural heritage/conservation, especially the policy, decision making aspects.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate a commitment to working within professional and ethical codes of conduct, display the ability to innovate and develop creative solutions for project delivery, have excellent communication skills, be committed to safe working practices, show initiative to work independently and display strong interpersonal skills with the ability to be an effective team member.
