Salary:

Research Assistant - £32,546 - £34,132 per annum

Research Associate - £35,116 - £41,671 per annum

The Role

We invite applications for a Research Assistant/Associate position in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University, to work with Dr Toby Wood and Prof Paul Bushby on the STFC-funded project “A solar-like dynamo driven by magnetic buoyancy”. The goal of this project is to simulate magnetic field generation and buoyancy instability in the solar interior using direct numerical simulations in both Cartesian and spherical geometries.

The position is offered on a fixed term basis for three years from start date, or tenable until the project end date, whichever is soonest. The start date will be on or after 1 July, 2025. We would be happy to discuss arrangements for flexible and/or blended working. Generous funds are available for travel, training and other support.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Developing computational models to simulate magneto-hydrodynamics in the solar interior
  2. Participation in the research activities of the Applied Mathematics group at Newcastle University
  3. Publication of high-quality research papers in journals of international standing
  4. Presentation of results at external meetings and seminars
  5. Minor involvement in the teaching activities of the School, as mutually agreed
  6. Any other duties that may be required from time to time, commensurate with the grade of the post

The Person (Essential)
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  1. Strong theoretical and/or computational background in a relevant area of fluid dynamics or magneto-hydrodynamics
  2. Track record of high-quality research, including publication in journals of international standing
  3. Excellent programming and numerical skills
  4. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, evidenced through contribution to national or international conferences
  5. At least one peer-reviewed publication in a relevant research field

  2. Ability to work independently using own initiative and to meet deadlines
  3. Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings and working on joint research projects
