What will you be responsible for?

The purpose of the Research and Development Scientist position is to develop, optimise and execute research and development techniques and projects as well as expand microbiological and molecular biology expertise within EnteroBiotix.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing, optimising, validating and executing a broad range of microbiological techniques and analytical approaches suitable for use in research or other areas of the business.
  • Performing experimental data analysis, authoring company reports, quality documentation, standard operation procedures, scientific publications and presentations to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Delivering progress and data reports at laboratory meetings.
  • Help to identify and develop novel scientific techniques suitable for drug product, donor-derived and biological sample types, relevant to EnteroBiotix.
  • Play an active role in laboratory management tasks such as maintaining inventories and ordering consumables, budget tracking, and helping to schedule equipment maintenance.
  • Contribute to a safe working environment by participating in Health and Safety activities such as the preparation of Risk Assessments and COSHH documentation, and near miss reporting.
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues across other technical areas of the business, including working closely with Formulation Development, Analytical Development and Quality Control.
  • Develop commercial awareness, networking and project management skills.
  • Be responsible for personal standards of safety and cleanliness.
  • Maintain own training record and pro-actively seeking out development opportunities.
  • Be a role model and demonstrate the EnteroBiotix values.

What are we looking for?

Essential

  • PhD or equivalent scientific experience in microbiology or another relevant life science discipline.
  • Experience performing practical microbiological techniques such as culture, strain isolation, and genetic analyses.
  • Experience performing molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, DNA quality analysis, and PCR.
  • Bioinformatics analysis of 16S sequencing data, and experience with the use of RStudio and other data analysis tools.
  • Excellent document and record keeping.
  • Comfortable operating and executing in a dynamic and fast paced environment, and always work to a high standard.
  • Experience in preparing and maintaining laboratory Health and Safety documentation, such as COSHH and Risk Assessments.
  • Experience in the field of microbiome and/or complex microbial communities.
  • Computer literate including use of MS suite of software and statistical analyses of microbiological data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, organised, reliable, and resourceful, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Hands on experience in the field of faecal microbiology or microbiome research.
  • Prior experience working in an industrial research environment.
  • Experience handling and interpreting large and complex datasets.
  • Familiarity with viability assays, anaerobic microbiological sample handling and 16S rRNA sequencing.
  • Working knowledge of bacterial identification and pathogen detection techniques.
  • Driving licence advantageous.
