Regulatory Police Lawyer/ Solicitor Advocate

About your new role

The Regulatory Department is one of the largest in the country and is recognised by clients and other lawyers as being one of the best. We advise clients across all sectors including health, public sector, corporations and individuals.

We are currently recruiting for police lawyers/ advocates to join our National Police team. In particular, we are looking for lawyers to advise, prepare and present civil protective orders in the Magistrates’ Court including Domestic Violence Protection Orders, Stalking Protection Orders, Sexual Harm Prevention Orders, Sexual Risk Orders, Anti-Social Behaviour injunctions and closure orders.

This is predominantly an advocacy role and regular (in some cases, daily) attendance at court is required. Our busy courts are in Guildford, Staines, Brighton, Ipswich and Essex but other courts are also attended for hearings. You must be willing and able to travel to these courts for 9.30am attendance.

Main duties and responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of around 100 civil protective orders in a very busy team, with high volume, quick turnaround applications
• Open files and draft all paperwork for the civil order applications, be responsible for your own management information data input completion, administration and diary keeping
• Managing and Taking responsibility for shared inboxes
• taking calls regularly to provide ad hoc advice and/ or taking calls for team members on their court days
• Present cases in the Magistrates' courts/Crown Court if you have Higher Rights on a daily basis in person travelling to our designated courts for hearings
• interacting with both the client personnel and Respondents, defence solicitors, police officers and counsel.
• Organise Case Manager diary and action lists
• Draft various documents
• Achieve set financial and chargeable targets and using a time recording application to record all work done on individual files
• Work in accordance with Weightmans’ values

About You

Ideally you will have previous experience as a qualified Solicitor or barrister and a genuine and demonstrable interest in the above area of work. As the role is varied, we are looking for you to have a flexible approach to the work you do and be able to adapt to different tasks. We also require you to have/be;
