Job description

The Tasmanian State Service (TSS) is the largest employer in Tasmania, with over 28,000 employees providing services to the Tasmanian community at all levels.

The Department of Health is seeking motivated and experienced Medical Practitioners to work as part of the Department of Emergency Medicine across Tasmania’s North West Region. Servicing a population of approximately 116,000, the Registrar – Emergency Medicine provides emergency medical care to patients attending the Department of Emergency Medicine at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH).

The NWRH is a modern facility that provides acute care facilities for residents of the North West region of Tasmania. It is a University Teaching Hospital for the Rural Clinical School of the University of Tasmania.

The NWRH Emergency Department has an annual attendance rate of 28,000 patients per year with a 28% admission rate. The Department treats a broad range of patients aged 0-100+, ATS 1-5. NWRH is the Regional Trauma Centre, and provides inpatient care for medicine, surgery, orthopaedic, paediatric, obstetrics, gynaecology and mental health patients. It supports a large outpatient department which, along with local services, provides tertiary outreach services from the Royal Hobart Hospital and extensive Oncology services. It is also the referral centre for several district hospitals including King Island.

There are currently 12 Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEMs) working alongside other senior clinical staff. Multiple Registrar vacancies are available for training in Emergency Medicine. The level of FACEM direct supervision and teaching is excellent.

The NWRH is an ACEM Emergency Medicine Education and Training (EMET) hub for the North West of Tasmania and there is an opportunity to complete the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate, the Associateship in Intermediate Emergency Medicine and the Associateship in Advanced Emergency Medicine at this hospital. There is also an opportunity for registrars to participate in reciprocal learning as part of the EMET programme travelling to rural sites, providing education to providers of emergency care in remote locations under FACEM supervision.

There is an opportunity for trainees that are approaching their fellowship to be rostered on the consultant roster with FACEM supervision to support the early transition between registrar and consultant. A Senior Registrar role is available to those who have passed their written Fellowship and are studying towards their OSCE, or those who have completed all exams and are not yet time complete.

The NWRH Emergency Department is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for twelve months training in Emergency Medicine with approval for completion of Paediatric Emergency Requirements. The ED is proud of its success in guiding candidates through the primary and fellowship examinations and mentoring those IMGs who are completing the ACEM SIMG pathway towards Fellowship. The department is also accredited for Advanced Skills Posts in Emergency Medicine for both ACCRM and RACGP and we encourage trainees from these colleges to apply for this position. The hospital also has other accredited teaching programs including medicine, surgery, palliative care, anaesthetics and paediatrics, and rotations in these other specialty areas are available to registrars.

We have a diverse team, with clinicians from more than ten countries in our department. Our FACEMs have a wide range of backgrounds from subspecialty training in simulation and toxicology to PEM training, mental health, palliative care, FACEMs with experience in humanitarian contexts and those part of the Australian Defence Force.

If you want to know if our department might be a good fit, one of our FACEMs or present registrars would be happy to talk with you about their experience.
