Working as part of a team and under the instruction of the Site Manager, the RCHW (Recycling Centre for Household Waste) Site Operative will contribute towards safe and efficient site operations ensuring the site is clean, tidy and free from risk or accidents and incidents. They will assist members of the public in a friendly and professional manner, providing information and direction as needed.

Assist with all aspects of site operations ensuring that adequate and safe information is given to the sub-contractors / hauliers for the load to be consigned and that the correct instructions are issued, helping to ensure that all traffic / waste movements and Safe Systems of work are adhered to at all times.

Service/Functional Accountabilities
  1. Comply with site specific rules, safe systems of work and risk assessments at all times.
  2. Deal efficiently and professionally with any requests / concerns / complaints from members of the public.
  3. Ensure materials are sorted and stored correctly to maximise amounts that can be recycled. Assist with waste sampling as appropriate. Report and feedback issues to be addressed.
  4. Responsible for all mobile plant/shunter operations as required to safely maintain material container capacities on sites.
  5. Fully accountable for the pre-use inspections of the plant/shunter, reporting any defects prior to shift start as well as undertaking general maintenance and preventive maintenance activities.
  6. Carry out routine tasks on a daily/weekly basis as defined by the Site Manager, including ensuring the site is clean, safe, and tidy and that equipment and supplies are kept clean and in good working order.
  7. Assist with the supervision of the safe movement of waste containers while ensuring the safety of the public.
  8. Help with the administrative tasks within the waste management processes, paperwork, compliance processes, quality assurance and other related documentation using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  9. Responsible for ensuring daily inspections are carried out to the required standard and are recorded appropriately in accordance with the Environmental Permit and Operating Procedures and ensure all defects are recorded and reported to the appropriate person; report any accidents/incidents and potential hazards that occur on site.
  10. To carry out any other duties commensurate with the post as required to meet the needs of the service.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
  1. Qualified to minimum GCSE level (or equivalent by experience) in English and Maths or NVQ level 2.
  2. Full driving licence with 2 years’ experience.
  3. IOSH Working Safely or equivalent safety accreditation is desirable.
  4. Desirable: NPORS or similar Plant Operators Licence/Qualification on Material Handler, with previous experience operating plant machinery preferably within the waste industry.
  5. Mechanical knowledge and knowledge of correct manual handling is desirable.
  6. Experience of working within the waste industry and a forward-facing customer environment, with an interest in recycling and the environment.
  7. Computer literate (especially Microsoft Excel and Outlook) with good administration skills.
  8. Ability to work without supervision as well as part of a team.
