Receptionist - Temporary Maternity Cover
An exciting opportunity has arisen at our busy GP practice for an enthusiastic receptionist to join our friendly team on a temporary basis to cover maternity leave.
This is a fixed-term role for up to 1 year, based at Hannage Brook Medical Centre, Wirksworth, working 15 hours over 2 days per week:
- Mondays: 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM
- Wednesdays: 8:00 AM - 6:30 PM (with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break)
There may be some flexibility with working hours, and the opportunity to undertake additional hours to cover leave as required.
We reserve the right to close applications earlier than the advertised deadline if we receive a high volume of interest.
The role is advertised at £12.21 but this rate is under review within our usual April 2025 pay review.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide general assistance to the practice team, ensuring a welcoming and professional environment for patients and visitors.
- Receive, assist, and direct patients efficiently, helping them access the appropriate healthcare professional or service.
- Handle telephone and face-to-face enquiries with courtesy and professionalism.
- Undertake various administrative tasks to support the smooth running of the practice.
- Facilitate effective communication between patients, the primary healthcare team, secondary care, and other healthcare agencies.

Job responsibilities
General Reception Duties:
- Receiving patients at the front desk, dealing with them in a polite, helpful, and friendly manner.
- Answering the telephone and acting upon the content of the call.
- Receiving and passing on messages face-to-face, via telephone or computer.
- Arranging the most appropriate appointment for patients.
- Dealing with the registration procedure for new patients.
- Contacting patients as instructed by clinicians.
- General office duties, including dealing with incoming and outgoing mail, sending emails and photocopying.
- To have a thorough knowledge of all practice procedures.
- Registrations of new/temporary patients computer data entry and medical records.
- Process repeat prescription requests in accordance with practice guidelines.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, or equivalent, including English and Maths.
- Any qualification/experience giving evidence of computer skills.
- Any qualification/experience giving evidence of customer service skills.
Experience
- Experience of working in an administrative office environment.
- Experience of dealing with people in a customer services role.
- Experience of working as part of a team.
- Previous experience working in a Primary Care setting.
- Previous experience as a receptionist in General Practice.
- Experience of answering calls in a high call volume environment.
Skills & Qualities
- Excellent oral communication skills, both face to face and on the phone.
