Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To construct customised immobilisation and shielding devices for patients prescribed external beam radiotherapy treatment. A high standard of accuracy is required as these devices are used to align and set-up radiation beams. The construction techniques require taking direct patient impressions.

To design and construct other immobilisation, shielding and beam modification devices for patient treatments, dosimetry checks, etc.

To measure patient organ doses on treatment when required for Total Body Irradiation.

To assist in the calibration and dosimetry quality assurance of radiotherapy treatment equipment and plans.

To perform IMRT verification as required.

To produce highly complex treatment plans using both IMRT and conformal techniques. This includes image fusion and some contouring.

To perform routine backup and archiving for treatment planning systems.

To assist in the development work in the department including involvement in clinical trials.

To participate in the training of other staff and visitors.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree in clinical technology / therapeutic Radiography or equivalent
  • Eligible to join Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists (or equivalent)
  • Participates in CPD (e.g. IPEM scheme)

Desirable criteria

  • IPEM certificate of completion of clinical technologist training or equivalent
  • Member of voluntary register of clinical technologists (or equivalent e.g. HCPC registration as Therapeutic Radiographer)

Communication skills

Essential criteria

  • Well written application showing good written communication
  • Examples of good verbal communication in a healthcare setting within application

Desirable criteria

  • Good team worker

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Specialist knowledge of Radiotherapy Physics Technology (to at least Post Graduate Diploma level) within an advanced radiotherapy department

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of treatment planning, mould room, dosimetry

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to deal with complex and unpredictable situations

Other requirements specific to the role

Essential criteria

  • Regularly handles plaster of Paris, lead and low melting point alloy (dust, fumes, and toxic chemicals), body fluids, vibration and noise from machinery.
  • Deals with cancer patients with fungating tumours, open wounds and tracheotomies

Desirable criteria

  • Able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the radiotherapy service

Physical skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to make accurate and precise patient immobilization devices.
  • Able to make accurate and precise radiation and patient measurements using sophisticated testing equipment (e.g. patient measurements during radiotherapy treatments)
  • Precise use of various type of machinery (e.g. block cutter, band saws, vacuum former).
