R&D Project Engineer

Our client, a design and manufacturing focused technology business, seeks to appoint an R&D Project Engineer. With a manufacturing facility near Wakefield (which you will work from) and an overseas design office (which you will visit, but not be based out of), your role as R&D Project Engineer will be to liaise between the two and ensure that designs from overseas are manufactured correctly in the Wakefield plant.

You will need to be comfortable reviewing engineering drawings and BOMs to ensure they are fit for purpose when released to the manufacturing team, and have previous experience of providing technical support to production, assembly, test, and quality teams involved in product manufacture. You need CAD skills and a lot of common sense!

As R&D Project Engineer, you will have a varied role working alongside end user clients, a matrix-managed engineering function, and manufacturing staff. There will be significant travel as part of this role, with a few trips each month, some of which will be international.

Responsibilities

  1. Lead and manage research and development of new and existing products and components - from initiation to completion, ensuring adherence to project scope, budget, and timeline.
  2. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, quality, production, and product management, to define project goals, deliverables, and success criteria.
  3. Design, develop, and implement innovative solutions, prototypes, and proof-of-concept models based on project requirements.
  4. Create detailed drawings for designs including General Assemblies.
  5. Create and manage BOM (Bill of Material) data for all Designed, Produced, and Assembled items.
  6. Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and technical evaluations to determine the viability and scalability of proposed solutions.
  7. Develop and execute test plans, experiments, and validation protocols to assess the performance and reliability of developed prototypes.

Skills and Abilities

  1. Degree in Mechanical, Energy, or Building Services Engineering would be ideal.
  2. 3+ years Mechanical Engineering Design experience.
  3. Hands-on approach to design.
  4. Good knowledge of high-end 3D and 2D CAD systems, ideally SolidWorks and AutoCAD or similar.
