Job description

About The Organisation

Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 as a national health board, employing around 1200 people, and with an annual budget of around £101 million. Public Health Scotland wants to see a Scotland where everybody thrives, a Scotland where life expectancy improves and the difference in life expectancy between our poorest and wealthiest areas gets smaller.

The role of the Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate is to protect the people of Scotland from infectious and environmental hazards; enable high-quality clinical and public health knowledge, research and innovation; and change clinical and public health practice by using audits at a national and local level.

The Post

An opportunity has arisen in the Public Health Microbiology Division within the Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate of PHS. The work of the Public Health Microbiology Division aids the coordinated detection of infectious diseases, characterises microbial pathogens and their variants efficiently and effectively, to support effective outbreak/pandemic management, treatments and interventions, all within PHS ambitions to reduce the public health burden in Scotland.

The Quality and Training Lead is an integral post to develop, maintain and improve a new quality management system for the national Pathogen Genomics service. The postholder shall be a subject manager expert with responsibility for systems training and will lead on all areas of Quality and Training at a national service level.

The Candidate

The candidate shall have experience of implementing quality management / quality assurance systems. The postholder will develop working relationships and effective communication with a wide range of individuals; clinical and non-clinical; internal and external to PHS to ensure co-operative, collaborative planning and decision-making. You will have strong communication skills, as you will have responsibility for interpreting and preparing timely communications.

You shall work closely with Bioinformaticians, clinicians, scientists, data management and business support colleagues across PHS Public Health Microbiology Division and will work collaboratively with Scottish Reference Laboratories, IT partners, Government and other stakeholder groups for this programme of work.

Location and Working Pattern:

The post is based in either Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Central Quay, Glasgow. We are currently hybrid working; therefore, you will be expected to spend time in both PHS offices as well as the option to work at home.

Please note that PHS will be relocating from Central Quay, Glasgow to Bothwell Street, Glasgow in 2025.

There will be an expectation to travel to local areas for some meetings and events.

Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week

PHS is a flexible employer, and we are happy to discuss requests for alternative working patterns

During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
