Job overview

The post holder will deliver high-quality speech and language therapy services to individuals with Learning Disabilities in Redbridge. Key responsibilities include conducting comprehensive assessments, diagnosing conditions, and designing personalised treatment plans for clients with diverse presentations and complex conditions. They will manage their own caseload and oversee a designated area of the service independently, with regular clinical supervision provided by the SLT clinical lead. Additionally, they will act as a resource for advice and support. This role involves performing clinical duties autonomously, as well as supervising, educating, and evaluating speech and language therapy students. Participation in evidence-based audit and research projects to enhance both personal and team clinical practices is expected. The post holder will also play a role in recommending changes to practice and may lead the implementation of specific changes or contribute to service protocols under the guidance of the clinical lead or team manager.

The post holder will work within an Integrated Health and Social Services (HASS) Team that is locality based.

Main duties of the job

  1. Conduct thorough assessments of service users with diverse presentations, utilising advanced clinical reasoning and a variety of assessment techniques for accurate diagnosis.
  2. Develop and implement personalised speech and language therapy treatment plans based on evidence-based practice.
  3. Manage specific conditions delegated by the Speech and Language Clinical Lead, providing specialist assessment and treatment plans.
  4. Provide accurate prognoses and comprehensive discharge plans.
  5. Obtain valid consent from service users/carers and involve them in decision making and care planning.
  6. Utilise exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities, employing both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to effectively convey complex condition-related information to impaired service users and their caregivers, facilitating the advancement of rehabilitation and treatment programs. This may involve collaborating with interpreters and bilingual SLT colleagues to ensure accessibility for service users whose primary language is not English.
  7. Evaluate service user progress and adjust treatment plans accordingly.
  8. Manage clinical risk within own caseload, adhering to clinical and professional guidelines.
  9. Work independently with support from the SLT Clinical Lead in community and domiciliary settings.

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High-Cost Area Supplement

This post also attracts payment for High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,551 and a maximum payment of £5,735) pro rata for part time staff.

Qualifications

  • Graduate Diploma/Degree/Msc in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent as recognised by RCSLT
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registration
  • Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist

Experience

  • 12 months post registration experience as a Speech and Language Therapist working with Adults with Learning Disabilities OR Experience in relevant or related clinical settings
  • Experience of Dysphagia case management in relevant clinical and community settings
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary or integrated team
  • Experience of giving support to more junior staff, assistance or students
  • Documented evidence of CPD

Knowledge

  • An awareness of NHS priorities
  • Broad knowledge of best practice examples currently applied in Speech and Language Therapy in ALD or relevant clinical specialism
  • Knowledge of current national policies and review relevant to provision of ALD services
  • Understand legal responsibilities of the profession and the associated code of ethics
  • Awareness of equal opportunities and diversity issues in ALD
