Job description

Are you a Psychology Graduate looking to take the first step in your Psychology Career? If so, join Cefn Carnau, a forensic low secure Learning Disability hospital as a Psychology Support Assistant.

As part of the development of the Psychology service we are looking to employ a number of Psychology Graduates who will be embedded within the clinical team. The role is split 30 hours per week as a Health Care Worker assisting service users on the ward with their health and care provision and 7.5 hours protected time working within the Psychology department.

As part of this role, you will work alongside the Lead Forensic Psychologist and two Assistant Psychologists on site. You will support with Positive Behavioural Support Plans (PBS), psychometrics, the therapeutic group programme and supporting with low intensity 1:1 psychological intervention.

As a Psychology Support Assistant, you will model and deliver PBS across the service; and assist the Senior Management Team in helping to create and sustain a therapeutic culture within which all members of the clinical team are able to deliver these interventions. You will be trained, supervised and managed by the Lead Forensic Psychologist & Ward Manager.

There may be other relevant opportunities to participate in additional training, research and audits. This is a great opportunity for you to enrich your CV with experience that would support becoming an Assistant Psychologist.

Contract of employment will be for a fixed period of 12 months.

As a Psychology Support Assistant, you will be:

  • Supporting the delivery of prescribed interventions to service users under the direct supervision of the Lead Forensic Psychologist.
  • Part of the development of the service, support the Senior Management Team in creating and sustaining a therapeutic culture within which all members of the clinical team will be able to deliver these interventions.
  • Undertaking additional assessments and therapeutic interventions to individuals and groups as directed by the Lead Forensic Psychologist.
  • Working as part of the nursing team on the ward in ensuring all needs of the patients are met.
  • Working as a health care worker which may involve assisting the patients in their personal care and any other aspects of patients' health and care provision under the supervision of the nursing team on the ward.

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • A BPS accredited recognised degree in Psychology conferring Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR).
  • To be highly motivated, enthusiastic, confident in giving feedback to service users and staff, able to work in a demanding clinical environment, sensitive to the needs of others, capable of giving unconditional positive regard, responsive to supervision.

Where you will be working:

Location: Cefn Carnau Lane, Thornhill, Cardiff, South Wales, CF83 1LX.

You will be working at Cefn Carnau, a modern new-build low secure hospital providing person-centred care and support for adults with a learning disability, including those who have autism. Service users may also present with mental health problems including Personality Disorders (PD).

The aim at Cefn Carnau is to reduce the presenting mental health issues and behaviours that are perceived as challenging in a setting where risk can be managed and reduced to allow service users to step down into community facing living.
