Project Manager - Durham

We are seeking an experienced and driven Project Manager to oversee the day-to-day delivery of construction activities across a range of civil engineering projects. Our client's upcoming projects cover a variety of schemes, including high street public realm refurbishments, highways projects, bus station schemes, large 278 schemes, port refurbishments, and bridge deck refurbishments. Key Responsibilities
  1. Oversee the successful delivery of civil engineering projects, typically valued at £5 million+.
  2. Manage project teams of 5+ staff, ensuring operational efficiency and high-quality execution.
  3. Lead and mentor engineers, site agents, and junior staff to foster development and progression.
  4. Maintain compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements, including NEC & JCT contracts.
  5. Work closely with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure project milestones are met.
  6. Promote health, safety, and environmental best practices.
  7. Conduct inductions, toolbox talks (TBTs), and safety briefings.
  8. Develop, review, and approve Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS).
  9. Produce site construction phase plans and fulfill the role of Temporary Works Coordinator.
  10. Attend and contribute to monthly HSEQ meetings and internal working groups.
  11. Apply strong knowledge of basic engineering principles to project execution.
  12. Develop and manage project programmes, updates, and scheduling.
  13. Provide problem-solving expertise, identifying innovative solutions to project challenges.
  14. Prepare and manage technical queries and delegate work effectively.
  15. Deliver weekly and monthly progress reports and hold internal and client progress meetings.
  16. Assist in preparing monthly commercial reports and procurement schedules.
  17. Maintain accurate records of direct and subcontract works to support the commercial team.
  18. Support in variation and quotation production, ensuring commercial compliance.
  19. Appraise and manage subcontractors, identifying risks and opportunities within projects.
  20. Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, 14001, and 18001 standards.
  21. Conduct internal project audits and implement quality control measures.
  22. Recognize and rectify defective works promptly to maintain high-quality standards.
  23. Compile and manage documentation for Health & Safety files and handover processes.
Experience & Qualifications
  1. HNC/HND/Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  2. Minimum 10 years' experience in civil engineering project delivery.
  3. CSCS Gold card (minimum) and 5-day SMSTS certification.
  4. UK driving license (clean or minimal points).
  5. Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and project planning software.
  6. Experience managing teams of 5 or more staff on projects.
  7. First Aid at Work certification.
  8. Basic experience in leadership training.
