Job description

Stericycle is a U.S. based business-to-business services company and leading provider of compliance-based solutions that protects people and brands, promotes health and well-being, and safeguards the environment. Since our founding over 30 years ago, we have grown from a small start-up in medical waste management into a leader across a range of increasingly complex and highly regulated arenas, serving healthcare organizations and commercial businesses of every size. Every day, we help our customers solve complex challenges by safely managing materials that could otherwise spread disease, contaminate the environment, or compromise one’s identity.

Join us on our mission to protect health and well-being in a safe, responsible, and sustainable way.

We are seeking a Project Manager to take full ownership of planning, managing, and delivering complex engineering and CAPEX projects across our operations. This role demands a high level of autonomy, strategic decision-making, and leadership to drive successful project outcomes while fostering innovation and operational excellence. You will be accountable for end-to-end project execution, from concept to handover, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and regulatory standards.

The role requires frequent travel (50% of the time) across the UK and internationally to support various project phases, including site assessments, installations, commissioning, and project closeout activities.

Key activities include:

Strategic Project Leadership:

  • Lead projects autonomously from concept design and feasibility through budgeting, execution, and commissioning to operational handover.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and long-term goals.
  • Serve as the primary decision-maker for project scope, timelines, and resource allocation.

Project Management:

  • Oversee all project phases, including feasibility studies, investment analysis, engineering design, permitting, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness.
  • Manage large-scale, high-value projects with complex interdependencies, ensuring successful delivery on time and within budget.
  • Establish project governance structures and manage cross-functional teams to achieve objectives.

Stakeholder and Contractor Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, acting as a trusted advisor and point of escalation.
  • Lead contractor selection, negotiations, and performance management to ensure delivery against contracts and expectations.
  • Represent the company at high-level meetings, negotiations, and strategic engagements.

Risk and Quality Management

  • Drive risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies to safeguard project success.
  • Conduct design reviews, technical assessments, and HAZOPs to ensure project quality and safety.
  • Enforce compliance with HSE standards and organizational policies throughout the project lifecycle.

Budget and Schedule Accountability

  • Take full responsibility for project budgets, financial performance, and schedules.
  • Monitor expenditures, identify cost-saving opportunities, and implement financial controls.
  • Deliver transparent reporting to senior leadership and stakeholders on project progress and financial health.

Team Development and Mentorship

  • Lead and mentor project teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide guidance and professional development opportunities for junior engineers and project staff.

Site and Logistics Oversight

  • Oversee site-based operations, ensuring smooth execution of plant upgrades, equipment installation, and infrastructure projects.
  • Manage logistics, including material and equipment coordination, to support seamless project delivery.
  • Conduct site inspections and ensure adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Management

  • Plan and execute project activities, including installations, upgrades, and commissioning of mechanical, electrical, or civil systems.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure objectives are met on time and within scope.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to coordinate site activities, including contractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support the development of project scopes, risk assessments, and technical documentation.

Site Assessments and Technical Support

  • Conduct site visits to assess project requirements, resolve technical issues, and provide on-site support.
  • Identify potential challenges during project implementation and develop mitigation plans.
  • Ensure alignment with engineering standards and project objectives.

Installation and Commissioning

  • Oversee the installation, commissioning, and testing of new equipment and systems.
  • Ensure compliance with design specifications, safety regulations, and quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during commissioning and handover phases.

Contractor and Stakeholder Management

  • Supervise contractors on-site to ensure adherence to company standards, safety protocols, and project timelines.
  • Issue permits to work and review contractor risk assessments and method statements.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for contractors and suppliers during project execution.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of project activities, including progress reports, change orders, and issue logs.
  • Prepare and present project updates to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Ensure all documentation is up-to-date and compliant with company and regulatory standards.

Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Promote and adhere to health and safety policies, ensuring all activities comply with UK and international legislation.
  • Conduct and document risk assessments and method statements for project-related activities.
  • Safely manage the isolation and decommissioning of equipment as part of project works.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for improving project processes and implementing best practices.
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures for project delivery.

Out-of-Hours and International Support

  • Be available to travel across the UK and internationally to support project activities.
  • Provide out-of-hours support for critical project milestones or emergency situations.

This role will cover multiple facilities across the UK and internationally, requiring frequent travel to various sites. Flexibility is essential to respond to project demands, including site assessments, installations, and commissioning activities. The position operates exclusively within the company's internal network.

  • Certification in health and safety standards such as NEBOSH or IOSH.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in an engineering or project-based role, preferably in heavy process industries.
  • Proven track record of managing contractors, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and delivering projects on time and within budget.
  • Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental compliance in industrial and international settings.
  • Experience in commissioning new systems and troubleshooting complex technical challenges.
