Help us create a better future, quicker

The main purpose of this role is to lead technical aspects of the development, sale and installation of Green Hydrogen (GH2) production, distribution and application systems and services of the Energy Retail Business (as directed by the Green Hydrogen Director) for their whole life cycle, developing organisational and process requirements along the way.

In what is a fast-paced and emerging area, the role holder is an expert in the technical aspects of their GH2 product area and any associated platforms; ensuring the end-to-end technical solution always meets the needs of both new and existing propositions, including hardware, installations, electrical connection, platform integration and post-sale operation.

The role will be responsible for ensuring all existing technical solutions are and remain compliant with all relevant technical standards and proactively seek solutions to evolve/improve solutions based on both existing and future needs in order to gain greater efficiency and/or more added value features.

What you'll be doing

As the owner of the product roadmap for all technical solutions, you will collaborate with various experts within and outside the business to ensure that all products comply with the latest regulations for electrical and hydrogen compliance, health and safety, and quality standards. Your role as the technical expert for the Green Hydrogen team will involve providing advice and leading the technical solution elements in senior-level customer meetings to secure new contracts with major national and multinational organizations, including large corporate businesses, retail chains, and hauliers.

You will serve as the technical focal point for all new business models that could significantly transform our retail business within the Green Hydrogen segment. This will involve working closely with design teams/contractors and commercial development managers under the direction of the Green Hydrogen Engineering Manager. Additionally, you will play a pivotal role in developing the Hydrogen UK development and commercial sales plan for products and services to business and third-party refueling customers by providing technical expertise for hardware, platforms, and installation.

Managing and influencing supply chain relationships to support new business enquiries and solution design will be crucial, ensuring that competitive solutions are offered within agreed timescales. You will also ensure that core processes are managed and delivered robustly, meeting relevant standards through appropriate controls, monitoring, audits, and reporting requirements. Engaging with senior-level management in supplier organizations to build positive working relationships and promote cross-industry learning and best practice sharing will be essential.

As the product lead for the technical aspects of hydrogen production and refueling platform services, including asset management, you will monitor and understand the impacts and opportunities of new technologies such as electrolysis, compression, storage, appliances, fuel cells, battery storage, and load balancing. You will proactively contribute to efficiency and sustainability improvements, cost reduction measures, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements throughout the Green Hydrogen Plant design lifecycle. Collaborating with Commercial Development Managers, you will ensure these technologies and improvements are integrated into the Hydrogen product strategies. Additionally, you will support ScottishPower's understanding and influence of political, regulatory, and competitor policies that impact new business opportunities within the supplied industries, owning all policy in this area.

What you'll bring

  • Graduate or equivalent in a technical business or engineering discipline with experience within a Hydrogen or similarly regulated environment, preferably across a variety (>1) of functions within it.
  • Proven record in managing and leading the design, development and optimisation of industrial processes and equipment layout for Hydrogen or process plants of similar nature.
  • Strong ability to understand complex technical solutions and make informed recommendations both internally and externally as appropriate.
  • Ability to co-ordinate and develop internal and external relationships and strategies that will achieve and support financial, regulatory, quality and supply chain targets.
  • Proven record in managing complex and multi-dimensional disciplines to include well developed influencing, negotiation, commercial, analytical and problem-solving skills at a senior level.
  • A strong understanding of technical platforms and how these interact with multiple hardware assets to deliver highly efficient products and solutions.
  • Strong performance management skills with a proven ability to manage 3rd party suppliers to agreed commercial & contracted service levels/agreement.
  • Confidence in challenging convention with strong abilities to influence cross-functional teams and build relationships.
  • Strong abilities to lead change and manage complex interfaces and relationships with other departments within and across the UK Retail business whilst maintaining complete compliance with commercial agreements, regulatory obligations & licence codes.
  • External awareness - ability to absorb and use new ideas from outside SP.
  • Ability to pilot, launch and monitor new business trials to understand technical fit and performance.
