Project Engineer

The Company

Buchan Offshore Wind is the developer of a major floating offshore wind farm 75 km to the northeast of Fraserburgh on the Aberdeenshire coast.

With an anticipated capacity of close to 1GW and a connection date of 2033, the project would feature up to 70 turbines and has the potential to generate the equivalent of the annual power needs of some 1.4 million British homes.

A dynamic, committed, and focused project team has seen the project deliver on its key milestones to date, with offshore surveys completed and offshore and onshore scoping reports both submitted. Importantly, the survey programme to date has reinforced our belief that there are no major barriers to securing a consent for the site, and the team is now working towards submitting the full planning application in the first half of 2025 and delivering on the project’s engineering roadmap.

The project’s selection of BW Ideol’s patented Damping Pool floating substructure has the potential to both accelerate delivery and generate significant levels of employment in Scotland, with BW Ideol actively working to establish a manufacturing centre at the former oil and gas fabrication yard at Port of Ardersier.

The joint venture has three equal partners, with highly relevant and complementary capability and expertise: BayWa r.e., a global renewable energy business with UK offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh; BW Ideol, a proven floating technology leader and international floating wind project co-developer; and Elicio, an experienced Belgian offshore wind developer, owner, and operator.

The Role

The Project Engineer is a key role supporting the development and delivery of the Buchan Offshore Wind project, reporting directly to the Offshore Engineering Manager.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the design and development of a wide range of aspects of the onshore and offshore infrastructure of the Buchan Offshore Wind project. The project is currently finalising design to support the consenting process and is progressing to concept design phase stage. The Project Engineer will support a broad range of aspects of the design through concept and beyond, working with an integrated engineering, planning, and project team to support the identification of deliverable and derisked engineering solutions for this critical infrastructure project. Providing support across the full width of the project, they will be exposed to pioneering floating wind hull and mooring designs, major civil engineering infrastructure solutions, and state-of-the-art electrical transmission and distribution system design.

We are an agile and integrated engineering and development team, and we will provide training and development opportunities to allow the candidate to broaden their knowledge of offshore wind to enable them to influence the direction of this pioneering project. Through these assignments, they will have the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge of all aspects of an offshore wind project across a range of engineering disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

Buchan Offshore Wind has an agile and experienced engineering team which will grow as the project progresses through development and construction. The Project Engineer role is a key part of these growth plans and will join to support the formative stages of onshore engineering design.

In this role, the candidate will be assigned to Design Package Managers to support their delivery of a range of packages. They will support a number of critical aspects of the project, including:

1. Floating offshore wind turbine, hull, and mooring design
2. Electrical engineering
3. Windfarm layout design
4. Construction and installation
5. Operations and maintenance
6. Supply chain
7. HSE and CDM

Within these packages, the project engineer will support the package lead in the following:

1. Undertaking in-house engineering tasks to inform critical decision making.
2. Developing design specifications.
3. Developing scopes of work and tender packages and supporting the selection and appointment of key design advisors.
4. Managing delivery of work packages from consultants, designers, and contractors.
5. Managing interfaces between relevant design packages.
6. Liaising with the supply chain.
7. Representing the project in a number of public forums.
8. HSE and CDM compliance in support of Buchan Offshore Wind’s duties as Principal Designer.

You will be a central part of the engineering team, supporting high-priority engineering tasks and enabling the whole team to keep Buchan Offshore Wind at the forefront of the floating offshore wind industry.

Candidate Requirements

The role is anticipated to be fulfilled by an engineer who has growing experience in the design and delivery of major engineering projects. While experience of offshore wind and/or energy projects is desirable, it is considered that experience in other analogous major infrastructure would provide relevant and transferable skills.

Essential skills for the role include:

1. BSc/MSc or BEng/MEng or equivalent degree in any relevant engineering or STEM discipline.
2. Approx. 3 years + experience of engineering projects
3. Strong technical background of a relevant engineering discipline, ideally across a range of discipline sets
4. Agile and adaptable, with experience in working in major project environments
5. Strong communicator, able to work effectively with a range of people across engineering and non-engineering disciplines, and an open and collaborative team member.
6. Skilled in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint.

Desirable skills include:

1. Experience in offshore wind or energy development.
2. Has completed an accredited training scheme or has strong evidence of being ready to apply for Chartered status.
3. A growth mindset and an ambition to develop into more senior roles as the project progresses
4. Strong analytical and digital skills
5. Experience in design integration roles
6. Experience in working with or for consultants and design advisors and supporting the management or delivery of contracts

Location and Working Arrangements

The post will be :

1. Full time (35 hours per week)
2. Based in Glasgow
