Job description

Project Development Manager (Legal Background) – Independent Power Producer

Are you currently working in legal practice supporting clients in the development of Energy Infrastructure assets? Ever considered what it would be like on the other side of the table, taking the commercial decisions, owning the relationships, coordinating Land, Planning, Grid, Community, Engineering etc?

Our client is one of the market leaders in Europe’s Grid Balancing industries. They develop, build, own, and operate major Energy Infrastructure including Battery Energy Storage (BESS), Pumped Storage Hydro (PSH), Thermal Power (Peakers), Hydrogen Production & Storage as well as Transmission systems.

They are a highly competent outfit and manage the full process in-house; Policy/Strategy, Greenfield Project Development, Financing (Equity & Debt structuring), Procurement, Construction, Operations, and Trading.

Given the complexity of Project Development, especially at the Nationally Significant Infrastructure level, hiring commercially minded individuals with strong legal or technical backgrounds gives some advantage. Our client has had great success hiring and promoting individuals from the legal community in the past and would ideally replicate this again now.

Project Development Manager Key Responsibilities

  • Support (in time, lead) the development of large-scale energy infrastructure projects overseeing strategy, land, planning, grid, and overall commercials.
  • Coordinate colleagues with specialist experience across the key project development verticals.
  • Interpret and apply UK planning laws, regulations, and environmental requirements to project development.
  • Provide technical and legal input into land agreements, contracts, and regulatory filings.
  • Monitor changes in energy and infrastructure legislation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in a legal capacity either in-house or practice.
  • Experience within renewable energy desirable (broader Real Assets experience – Infrastructure etc. considered).
  • Ability to draft, review, and negotiate complex legal documents.
  • Strong level of commercial awareness.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent data organisation and analytical skills.
  • The ability to work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Location

With a London HQ and smaller regional hubs, there is some flexibility. Preference for a balanced week between office and home with site/stakeholder travel as required.
