Professional Support & Wellbeing Clinical Case Manager

The Professional Support and Wellbeing Service (PSW) is dedicated to supporting doctors fulfil their career potential and meet their training needs and expectations.

The PSW aims to support educators to identify early warning signs amongst their trainees, develop understanding of resilience and well-being amongst both trainees and educators, increase educator awareness of concerns amongst trainees, and improve understanding of when and where to escalate these concerns. It is recognised that there are times when trainees would benefit from increased and specialist support, beyond that which their clinical and educational supervisor can provide.

The PSW is able to provide this support for both trainees and their educators.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the role of a Clinical Case Manager (CCM) within the PSW Clinical team. The successful candidate will work with a team of dedicated clinical and non-clinical staff within the PSW, including the Clinical Lead for the PSW.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Meeting with trainees who have been triaged and allocated to them by the PSW team.
  • Participating in strategic/operational PSW meetings.
  • Promoting the PSW.

Job responsibilities

This role will be an integral member of the PSW. The post holder will need to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and experience of working with doctors/dentists/pharmacists in training who have differing needs.
  • Ability to sensitively manage complexity and uncertainty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate the values of the NHS in all avenues of their work.

The post holder will be expected to commit to 1 session on average per week. This will be an agreed and fixed day.

This is a varied role that provides the opportunity to work closely with senior educators and the administration team at NHSE.

Secondments: Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only; agreement should be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

  • Primary clinical healthcare qualification.
  • Membership/Fellowship of a Royal College, Faculty, professional association and/or regulatory body.
  • Educational Qualification (such as a PG Certificate, Diploma or masters in Medical Education).

Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrable leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication, counselling & liaison skills - readiness to listen and empathise.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to rapidly establish working relationships within multi-disciplinary teams.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experience working with learners or doctors/dentists in training in an educational context and awareness of dealing with trainees who are failing to progress or otherwise require additional support.
  • Understanding of developments involving relevant Royal Colleges/Faculties/professional bodies, related NHS organisations, and regulatory bodies.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the challenges facing doctors/dentists in training both inside work and outside within the East of England (acknowledging that every trainee is different).
  • Active involvement in and up to date with own appraisal process.
  • An awareness of the PSW and what we do to support trainees.
  • Previous or current appointment as a leader in healthcare education or senior educational role in the relevant college or specialty school.
  • Understanding of current health, social care, and education policy.
