Job description

Imperial College London and the University of Cumbria have entered into a partnership to form the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine (PCSM), based at the University of Cumbria at the Carlisle Fusehill street campus. Professional Development Tutors (PDTs) will each have a tutorial group of approximately ten medical students. The PDT will support each student to realise their academic, personal, and professional aspirations while in medical school, and during their professional practice.

Main duties of the job
  • Promote the development of your tutorial group by holding learner-centred conversations, drawing on adult learning principles and coaching approaches.
  • Monitor students' academic and clinical progress through the programme, supporting them to improve their performance and celebrating their achievements.
  • Support the students in developing and sustaining their professional collaboration with the local healthcare community, preparing them to practise in the local NHS.
  • Proactively monitor and support their wellbeing, discussing day to day issues but signposting more complex needs to relevant wellbeing, disability or finance support services.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • A primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) full GMC registration and Membership of the relevant Royal College.
  • Clinically active, working as a Consultant, General Practitioner or SAS doctor in the Cumbria region.
  • Experience of coaching, mentoring or otherwise supporting the development of junior colleagues.
  • An open and personable disposition with the ability to build rapport with students.
  • Ability to role-model the professional values and behaviours expected of medical professionals.
Experience
  • Clinically active, working as a Consultant, General Practitioner or SAS doctor in the Cumbria region.
  • Experience of coaching, mentoring or otherwise supporting the development of junior colleagues.
  • Experience of medical education in the UK HEI sector.
  • Experience of and enthusiasm for supporting undergraduate students.
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate level in Higher Education.
Knowledge
  • Ability and willingness to develop a detailed understanding of the PCSM undergraduate medical degree structure and curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NHS environment, especially education, providing networking opportunities to support medical students.

  • An open and personable disposition with the ability to build rapport with students.
  • Ability to role-model the professional values and behaviours expected of our students and staff.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment while dealing sensitively with student information, respecting confidentiality.
