Join a forward-thinking organization as a Prison to Community Link Volunteer, where you will play a vital role in supporting individuals transitioning from prison back into the community. This rewarding position involves meeting people on their release day, accompanying them to important appointments, and offering vital peer support. You will gain valuable experience, receive training, and be part of a dedicated team committed to making a difference in the lives of those affected by addiction and criminal justice. If you are passionate about helping others and want to contribute to positive change, this opportunity is perfect for you.
Waythrough launched in October 2024 following the merger of Humankind and Richmond Fellowship. Our vision is to break down the barriers that stop people getting the support they need to live a life they value. We tackle poverty and disadvantage in communities, through mental health, drug and alcohol, housing and related support.
We have almost 200 services around England – and nearly 3,500 amazing staff and volunteers who run them. Every year our services support around 125,000 people.
Prison to Community Link Volunteer
Location: Exeter
Together Drug and Alcohol Service is the commissioned community drug and alcohol provision for Devon. It provides a range of support, interventions and treatments for adults wanting to make positive changes to their drug and/or alcohol use, as well as supporting family members and running campaigns and events that raise awareness of addiction and celebrate recovery in the community.
About the role
As a Prison to Community Link Volunteer, you will be involved in supporting people leaving prison and will meet them on the morning of their release, at prison based ‘discharge lounges’. You will then accompany individuals to key appointments that same day, including Probation meetings and prescribing appointments with Together Drug and Alcohol Services. You will offer a listening ear, be able to signpost to other services, and if you bring your own lived experience, provide powerful peer support.
Most prison releases happen Monday to Friday between 8am and 11am, so we ask that volunteers would be available during this time.
There may be the opportunity to be involved and support with other areas of the criminal justice team as the role progresses. There may also be the opportunity to facilitate SMART Recovery meetings and full training would be provided.
It would be useful to be able to drive and have access to your own transport, though it is not essential for the role.
