Job summary

As part of the new Mental Health contract awarded to Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, we are looking for registered mental health nurses to join us at HMP Northumberland Mental Health Team. This vacancy is open to Band 5 Registered Nurses. This is a developmental post with progression to a Band 6 upon meeting the criteria within the Band 6 job description and competency framework specific to Health & Justice Services.

This is an excellent opportunity for nurses to join a team working in a rewarding environment in the Mental Health Team at HMP Northumberland where you will get to develop a full range of psychiatric skills and interventions. Main duties of the job

You will be a Registered Mental Health Nurse. You'll have a flexible approach to working within a team that encourages new ideas and opinions on how to improve the service. You will have experience providing compassionate mental health care and have an understanding of the criminal justice system. You will make ongoing assessments of need reflecting individual circumstances and provide relevant interventions and input to discharge planning. You will be required to have strong coordination and planning skills, with the ability to make decisions based on comprehensive health and risk assessments.

You should be innovative, flexible and able to engage with patients with complex needs. You will be committed to a person-centred approach and have the ability to prioritise. We are looking for clinicians who will thrive working in a busy environment amongst a wider well-resourced team of multidisciplinary professionals, as well as alongside partner providers from a variety of internal and external services.

As part of the Mental Health contract awarded to Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, we are excited to expand our prison mental health services and are looking for registered professionals to join us at HMP Northumberland. HMP Northumberland is a Category C prison. The establishment serves all courts in the region and accepts prisoners sentenced by the courts.

Qualifications

Essential

  1. Current professional registration with an approved professional body
  2. Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  3. For registered nurses: MIP, FLIP, ENB 998 Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice or City & Guilds 730 Teaching in Adult Education or willingness to work towards. Qualification must be achieved within agreed timescale.
  4. Trained Clinical Supervisor (within agreed timescale).
  5. Key skills in literacy, numeracy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential

  1. Working with people with mental ill health.

Desirable

  1. Working in a person-centred therapeutic organisation
  2. Working in a community setting
  3. Working in forensic mental health services.
  4. Working in a prison setting.
  5. Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers
  6. Working in a multi-disciplinary team
  7. Working in partnership with other agencies

Skills

Essential

  1. Must be able to: Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers/families and all members of the multidisciplinary team
  2. Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  3. Undertake lead professional and care co-ordinator responsibilities (within agreed timescale).
  4. Manage own time and prioritise effectively
  5. Motivate and work positively and assertively with other members of the team.
  6. Provide effective teaching, training and clinical supervision (within agreed timescale)
  7. Use approved breakaway techniques (within agreed timescale).
