PRINCIPAL TEACHER - SENSORY AND COMMUNICATION SERVICE (ASN OUTREACH)

The Sensory and Communication Service is an education outreach service that delivers specialist, education-based support to help meet the needs of children and young people with additional support needs relating to vision, hearing, and communication.

It forms part of the wider Education Outreach Service, which works in partnership with the Education Psychology Service, allied health professionals, social work, and other relevant partner services.

The Sensory and Communication Service supports staff in schools and ELC settings, partner agencies, children, young people, and families by working collaboratively with others as part of the Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) process. This can be done through consultation and advice, assessment, direct intervention, staff development and training, networking and linking, as well as strategic development.

The Principal Teacher will manage a small, specialist team made up of hearing, vision, and communication teachers and learning support workers.

The Principal Teacher will carry an operational caseload within a specialism alongside their management duties. These duties will include:

  • Supervising and operating an enabling model of service delivery through working collaboratively with staff in school and pre-school settings, partnership agencies, parents, children, and young people to achieve the principles of inclusion.
  • Providing consultation, advice, assessment, training, and support in response to Requests for Involvement as part of a staged approach to intervention.
  • Promoting integrated working and coordinated planning as part of the GIRFEC approach and the vision for Scotland's children as safe, healthy, nurtured, achieving, responsible, respected, and included.
  • Establishing excellent relationships with young people and their parents/carers, and working effectively in partnership with other professionals.
  • Attending relevant Child Centred meetings and reviews.
  • Working as an integral part of the Education Additional Support Needs Outreach Group.
  • Supporting and contributing to the strategic work of the authority relating to additional support needs and inclusion.
  • Contributing to improvement planning.
  • Managing an operational budget.

The successful applicant should be qualified or be willing to undertake specialist qualification study in Inclusive Education with a specialism in Visual impairment, Deaf education, language and communication, or another relevant area of specialist ASN practice.

QUALITIES AND APPROACHES

  • Leadership and management skills. You will be responsible for a small team of educational professionals and be able to lead and work effectively as part of the team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a high degree of emotional intelligence.
  • Professional commitment and thorough knowledge and understanding of Additional Support Needs and specialisms of vision, hearing, and communication support within the Scottish education context.
  • Ability to use quality assurance frameworks to support assessment, planning, learning, and teaching.
  • Manage difficult situations in a confident, open, and calm manner.
  • Prioritise the needs of children and young people and their families and respond in a thoughtful and positive way.
  • Knowledge of education legislation, policy, and the national landscape relating to sensory and communication ASN.

  • The grade of this post is Principal Teacher - Job Size 2.
  • Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,859 per annum.
  • Permanent Full Time post for 35.0 Hours per Week.
  • Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made.
  • You must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) prior to starting in post.
  • A relocation package does apply to this post.
  • We will pay interview expenses from within the UK.

  • FTE of Post - 1.0.
  • Class Information - birth to age 19.
