Job description

We are seeking an experienced and ambitious Senior/Principal Structural Engineer to join our highly regarded, award-winning Civil & Structural team in Plymouth. This role offers the opportunity to lead and deliver exciting projects, supported by a talented team within a collaborative and people-focused culture.

Whether you are an experienced senior engineer looking to step into a principal role or a seasoned principal seeking a fresh challenge, this position provides a clear pathway for career progression, exposure to a diverse portfolio of projects, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on our growing business.

You will join a multidisciplinary environment, with the opportunity to work alongside other successful divisions such as MEP, Nuclear and Smart Energy and Sustainability. Projects typically range from £10M-£50M in value across a diverse range of sectors including Education, Residential, Heritage, Healthcare, Commercial, Logistics and Distribution, and Defence.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery:

  1. Lead the design and delivery of structural engineering projects, from concept and scheme design to detailed design, tender, and construction packages.
  2. Oversee the preparation of calculation packages for submission to Building Control and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards.
  3. Provide technical oversight and review contributions from project engineers and technicians.
  4. Promote innovation in design while maintaining high-quality standards and adhering to Hydrock’s quality assurance processes.

Team Management:

  1. Manage and develop graduate engineers, engineers, and technicians within your team.
  2. Take ownership of resource planning, ensuring the efficient allocation of team capacity across projects.
  3. Contribute to divisional initiatives such as task groups and design innovation.

Client and Business Development:

  1. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, architects, and contractors.
  2. Support the preparation of fee proposals, bids, and ITTs.
  3. Participate in client networking and represent the team at industry events, with a focus on cultivating new opportunities.
What We’re Looking For

Qualifications:

  1. MEng or BEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  2. Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (or actively working towards it) with either the IStructE/ICE chartered.

Experience and Skills:

  1. Proven experience in building structures design across various sectors.
  2. Proficiency in analysis, modelling, and hand calculations.
  3. Demonstrated ability to lead teams on projects.
  4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage clients and inspire team members.
