Principal Primary HV Plant Design Engineer

NRL are currently recruiting a Principal Primary HV Plant Design Engineer to join the Power T&D division of a top tier client of ours.

Role Purpose:
The main function of the role is to lead the HV Primary Engineering design delivery for electrical substation projects on the transmission network up to voltages of 400kV with the assistance of the Design Engineers and Designers. Preferably the candidate will have previous experience of undertaking TP137 Contractors Design Approval Engineers (CDAE) for National Grid projects or be in a position where they could be put forward for authorisation. In addition, the Principal Plant Engineer would assist the Design Delivery Managers in the day to day running of the engineers and technicians teams. The role also includes leading the team in planning and procurement responsibilities for delivery of substation projects. Our team is flexible and the role can be based in various locations across the UK.

Key accountabilities:

1. Lead the Design team to deliver design to the Customer specification requirements, ensuring compliance with relevant National / International Standards and legislation.
2. Check and approve HV plant design deliverables including single line diagrams, layout/elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing design/calculations, etc.
3. Lead Design work with due regard to Health & Safety Procedures and the Company’s obligations in compliance with current CDM regulations.
4. Ensure all required models and drawings have an adequate level of review and approval including the supplier and subcontractor supply chains.
5. Lead the technical direction of the engineering team, taking best practice and industry developments into engineering methodology.

1. Ensure duties are carried out in accordance with Standard Company Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Procedures and Business Process Manuals.
2. Delivery of engineering design to programme, quality and budgets, and lead safety and sustainability by Design into the engineering delivery.
3. Functionally the authorised approver of designs on contracts in accordance with the published design/check/approve authorisation levels.
4. Identify (and contribute to) the development and training needs of the design team as appropriate to skill level/experience.
5. Identify and effectively manage inter-disciplinary design gaps in collaboration with the appropriate project engineering managers.
6. Assistance to the Design Delivery Manager in the day to day running of the design department as deemed appropriate to skill level/experience.

1. Report variations in the Contract Scope of Work to the Design Manager/engineering manager, indicate implications and only proceed with these variations following verbal/written approval from the Engineering Manager.

1. Identify all relevant standards and Customer requirements, ensuring compliance with relevant National / International Standards and legislation, and contract specification.
2. Design work to be undertaken with due regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures and production of Designer Risk Assessments, as necessary.
3. AIS and GIS substation design up to 400kV.
4. Check and approve substation design deliverables including single line diagrams, layout/elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing design/calculations, etc.
5. Good understanding of electrical/mechanical interlocking philosophy.
6. To carry out Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE), as defined by National Grid’s procedures, or equivalent role as defined by other clients.
7. Ability to perform Principal Designer representative (PD Rep) role as per CDM 2015 regulation.
8. Check and review equipment tech specs and engagement with supplier for their offer validation.
9. Examine contract documentation and establish the Company’s scope of work including termination boundaries.
10. Attend and Lead the Design Review/Contract Close-out Meetings.
11. Liaise with Engineers, Designers and Technicians on drawings requirements.
12. Ensure accurate final records are prepared and submitted to client in line with the requirements of the contract specification.
13. Specify any test certificates and/or operations & maintenance manuals as part of technical spec and/or purchase order requisition.
14. Good understanding of Interface with Civil and other substation disciplines.
15. Carry out engineering checks as deemed necessary.
16. Provide support to manufacturing & construction departments in resolving design related issues.
17. Provide support to tendering for design deliverables, estimates and customer meetings.

1. Input into the allocation of work packages, coordinate workload and agree priorities within the Primary Plant Team.
2. Prepare, contribute to, check and review DEMP (Design and Engineering Management Plans).
3. Upon contract award, liaise and co-ordinate contract requirements with Design Engineers, Project and engineer.

1. Microsoft Office packages.
2. Working in a Design Office environment with over 10 years of experience.
3. Liaising with customers and suppliers.
4. Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs.
5. Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated power system components.
6. Experience as a senior HV Substation Primary Plant Design Engineer.
7. Basic understanding of P&C aspects preferable.
8. TP137 / SR188 Contractor Design Assurance Engineer experience is an advantage.
9. Proven experience in a responsible position and knowledge in HV substation equipments HV plant, transformers, etc.
10. BIM 360 experience and knowledge.

1. National Grid exposure.
2. Autocad.
3. TP 137 / SR 188 Principal Designer Representative (Design & Build) experience.
4. Chartered Engineer (IET).
