Principal Powertrain Software Engineer

Location: Birmingham
Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Salary and Benefits: Up to £80,000 starting salary, free lunch, performance bonus and much more.

About the Role:
An exciting opportunity awaits for a skilled engineer to play a leading role in e-drive and power electronics controls as we advance electrification efforts in the automotive sector. Working within a UK-based R&D team, this Principal Powertrain Software Engineer role focuses on developing intelligent control systems for next-generation electrified powertrains. This is a chance to make a substantial impact within an innovative environment at the forefront of electric powertrain engineering.

Key Responsibilities as Principal Powertrain Software Engineer:

  1. Develop and optimise e-drive and power electronics control systems in line with project objectives.
  2. Collaborate with stakeholders to capture and analyse system requirements.
  3. Design and implement control algorithms using MATLAB/Simulink, with autocode generation for production.
  4. Specify diagnostics, CAN communication, and safety monitoring strategies.
  5. Conduct testing and validation on electrical test benches, HiL, and vehicle platforms.
  6. Troubleshoot and solve issues through investigations and expertise sharing.
  7. Contribute to DFMEA and functional safety (ISO26262) processes.
  8. Oversee technical aspects of supplier delivery to ensure project milestones.

Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic, Control Systems Engineering or a related field.
  2. Highly experienced in real-time embedded control systems, ideally with automotive experience.
  3. Strong background in e-drive control software and power electronics, with proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink.
  4. Experience with data logging and calibration tools (e.g., INCA, CANalyzer, CANape) and CAN protocols.
  5. Knowledge of system engineering practices and automotive software quality standards.
  6. Familiarity with ISO26262 Functional Safety, DFMEA, and diagnostic development.
  7. Ability to travel periodically for development trips and supplier visits.
  8. Eligible to work in the UK.
