We have an excellent temporary opportunity for a highly skilled Principal Oracle DBA to join our team and help us drive forward the Trust's Data Warehousing and Cloud-first strategies whilst implementing a new Patient Administration System.

Main Duties of the Job

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and forward-thinking individual who possesses highly expert technical knowledge of Oracle and Oracle architecture, combined with excellent proven mentoring and leadership skills.

The successful candidate will be based at the City Hospital Campus, working closely with the current SQLDBAs as well as the Infrastructure and Software Development teams. You will provide extensive in-depth technical expertise, leadership, guidance, and support to the Trust in the architecture, maintenance, upgrading, and troubleshooting of existing Oracle databases (including, but not restricted to, the Trust's DHR solution), as well as the architecture, configuration, tuning, and delivery of new Oracle databases and other new database tools and technologies.

Job Responsibilities

Your work will be varied and interesting, encompassing the creation and maintenance of high and low-level designs for our databases and their underlying infrastructure. You will work closely with our solution and domain specialists, implementation teams, and external suppliers to understand the needs of the database solutions, defining patterns and standards to ensure consistency, resilience, security, and best practices in the delivery and operation of the platforms. The role will also encompass some elements of line management and team leadership, such as providing guidance and mentoring to more junior staff.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

  • A relevant IT degree at MSc level or above, or equivalent technical qualification & experience.
  • Management/leadership qualification or training/experience.
  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) in relevant versions of Oracle Database (e.g., Oracle Database 8, 11g, 19c, 21c).
  • Project Management Training (Prince2, Agile).
  • ITIL Foundation certification for IT service management.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in Oracle Database Administration.
  • Experience in PostgreSQL/MySQL database administration, including using Patroni for HA PostgreSQL clustering.
  • In-depth hands-on experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager and other Oracle tools.
  • Advanced performance tuning and optimisation of Oracle, MySQL, Postgres.
  • Experience in implementing backup and recovery strategies (RMAN, Data Guard).
  • Experience in implementing high availability and disaster recovery (RAC, Active Data Guard).
  • Familiarity with containerization & orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with Oracle Forms.
  • Knowledge of Percona, performance monitoring/backup.
  • Experience with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Communication and Relationship Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication and motivational skills, communicating with clarity, enthusiasm, commitment, and conviction.
  • Strong communicator who is experienced at and able to lead/chair meetings at a senior level.
  • Proven mentoring and coaching skills.
