An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Consultant to support the delivery of innovative blue-green infrastructure (BGI) and sustainable drainage (SuDS) projects. The team is leading the way in retrofitting urban environments with nature-based solutions to reduce flood risk and pollution spills. Recent projects include award-winning schemes such as the Mansfield Sustainable Flood Resilience (MSFR) project, where blue-green interventions have transformed the town into a sponge, capturing surface water and alleviating sewer capacity pressures.

This role will involve contributing to business development, project management, and technical excellence across a variety of projects, with opportunities to collaborate with landscape teams and other disciplines to create solutions that benefit both people and biodiversity.

Responsibilities

As part of this dynamic team, you will:

  • Win Work and Develop Relationships: Identify and pursue business opportunities, prepare bids and proposals, and foster relationships with clients, government bodies, and key stakeholders.
  • Project Leadership: Lead project teams and provide client-facing support throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring high-quality delivery.
  • Technical Input and Oversight: Contribute technically to projects, write clear and concise reports, and review the work of others to maintain high standards.
  • Promote Blue-Green Solutions: Become an advocate for nature-based solutions, helping to identify opportunities and communicate the benefits of BGI to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Mentor and Develop Team Members: Support the professional development of junior team members through mentorship and knowledge sharing.
  • Monitor Budgets and Commercial Outcomes: Ensure projects are delivered within budget and aligned with commercial objectives.
  • Engage with the Industry: Opportunities to represent the organisation by speaking at conferences and engaging with industry bodies.
Experience

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • Experience in Civil Engineering or Related Disciplines – A background in civil engineering, environmental science, or a related discipline with experience working on water sector or infrastructure projects.
  • Project Leadership and Bid Experience – Proven experience leading project teams, managing complex workloads, and securing work through bid proposals.
  • Passion for Blue-Green Infrastructure and SuDS – Eagerness to promote the benefits of blue-green solutions and SuDS, with knowledge of their application in new-build or retrofit contexts.
  • Hydraulic and Hydrological Knowledge – Familiarity with stormwater management processes and the use of models such as InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage, or similar software.
  • Digital Curiosity – An interest in exploring the use of digital tools and technologies to improve design processes and efficiency.
  • Confident Across Design Stages – Comfortable working across different stages of the design process, from concept development through to implementation.
  • Experience in Regulated Sectors – Ideally, experience working within regulated industries such as the water or highways sectors.
