Job Description:

Principal Engineer/Project Manager (Bridges)
Vacancy Base: Newport, Isle of Wight
Hours: 40

We seek a qualified Structures Manager to lead our team in managing the island's structures under the IOW Highways PFI Contract. This role includes overseeing inspections, assessments, maintenance, and reconstruction of approximately 200 bridges and 600 retaining walls.

Key Accountabilities:
  1. Work independently on technical tasks, including inspections and feasibility studies.
  2. Develop and maintain strategies for inspections, assessments, and maintenance.
  3. Create and manage a forward works program.
  4. Provide technical advice, review budgets, and monitor compliance with standards and regulations.
  5. Communicate with stakeholders for information sharing and relationship building.
  6. Mentor less experienced staff.
Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications:
  1. Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng MICE/MIStructE or equivalent)
  2. Experience with inspections using the BCI system.
  3. Working knowledge of standards, codes of practice, and guidance related to highway structures.
  4. Familiarity with relevant asset management systems and British Standards.
  5. Budgetary control and risk assessment skills.
  6. Ability to manipulate databases and spreadsheets.
Preferred Requirements:
  1. Experience in the design of highway structures.
  2. Construction site experience.
  3. Familiarity with NEC3 forms of contract.
  4. Ability to drive.
  5. Clear work history and proof of professional development and learning.
Decision Making:

Prioritize workload and make decisions on issues affecting assets' cost, safety, and performance.

Contacts and Relationships:

Communicate effectively with various stakeholders, including the public, officers, developers, environment agencies, and external consultants.
