Job Title: Primary CDAE Engineer

Location: Birmingham/Glasgow, United Kingdom

The Primary CDAE Engineer will be a member of the Linxon UK Engineering Team and will contribute towards the effective execution of the primary engineering functions within projects and tenders. Primary Engineer will lead and work in a skilled team on a wide range of National Grid, SSEN & SPEN substation projects.

What will you do?

Key Areas of Responsibility (KARs):

1. Overall responsible for managing & leading all primary engineering activities from project start till the As-Built stage with strict adherence to Project Specifications & Linxon standards including QA/QC, HSSE & Integrity.
2. Instruct, supervise & coordinate with other engineering team (GETS) within Linxon (local & remote), internal & external partners, sub-suppliers, secondary engineers & civil engineers.
3. Review of HV plant design packages as per NG/ET/SR188.
4. Completion of the relevant section of the DID.
5. Submitting completed Design Packages for Design Compliance Audit.
6. Ensuring all design changes are managed in accordance with the design change management process defined as per NG.
7. Attending Design Review meetings (DRMs) and Hazard review meetings (HRMs) as required.
8. Review and certify the design packages and issue the DCAAR.
9. Provide information for civil designs and coordination of interfaces between construction planning, steel structure engineering, protection and control system, auxiliary power system and all equipment suppliers for the project.
10. Participate in technical discussions with customers and suppliers, handle site queries and take necessary actions up to as-built documentation.
11. Primary engineering budget, schedule, forecast, risk & change management activities.
12. Primary engineer of large and complex EHV/HV Air & Gas Insulated Substation (AIS & GIS) projects in UK.

Technical solutions

1. Provide technical solution for substations comprising Single line diagram, technical information, layouts and associated detail drawings and documents by established applicable standards, processes and customer specifications through allocated resources remotely.
2. Prepare Design Intent Document (DID) / Functional Design Specification (FDS) based on supplier inputs.
3. RFQs for HV Plant equipment.
4. Reviewing supplier deliverables based on project specifications and standards.
5. Support site team during execution stage.
6. Provide technical calculations and schedules for all equipment for projects or tenders.
7. Prepare bill of quantities (PEMS), deviations & clarifications for technical solutions.
8. Review of Suppliers design and Factory acceptance test plans.
9. Provide technical support and to develop tender scheme options and related project scope documents.

Experience Required:

1. Bachelor or Master’s in electrical engineering or equivalent.
2. Minimum 10 years substation engineering experience in utilities. Knowledge of required NG, SSEN & SPEN requirements and standards.

Other Position-Specific Characteristics

1. Availability to travel 25 % of the time (domestic/international travel).
2. Working in an office and on a construction site.

Competencies/ Skills Required:

1. Contractor Design approval engineer (CDAE) HV plant certification from National Grid.
2. Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it.
3. Result orientated team player with a proactive approach.
4. Excellent in communication, to interact with external and internal parties at all levels in a multi-cultural environment.
5. Expert knowledge in Substation primary design and engineering, Layouts, Grounding & Lightning design, Steel design inputs, transformers, HV & MV Switchgear systems, HV & MV cable calculations, earthing calculations.
6. Strong in MS Office, knowledge in MicroStation and AutoCAD is required.
7. Fluency in English – both written and spoken.
