We have an opportunity for a Prevention Officer (Road Safety) to join our team based at Service Headquarters on a Permanent contract (37 hours per week). In return, you will receive a competitive salary starting at £32,654.00 and rising to £35,235.00 per annum.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is the largest non-metropolitan Fire and Rescue Service in England. We provide prevention, protection, and response services across the counties of Devon and Somerset.

As a Prevention Officer (Road Safety), you will play an integral role working with the Road Safety Lead and Road Safety team to reduce preventable incidents of those killed and seriously injured on the roads within our Service area. You will be responsible for planning, designing, delivering, and evaluating prevention interventions that are data-led and target the most at-risk groups on our roads – including younger drivers and motorcyclists.

In this role, you will supervise and oversee a team of Road Safety Advocates in the delivery of risk reduction interventions across Devon and Somerset. You will develop, nurture, promote, and maintain effective, relevant, and synergistic working relationships with key partners and stakeholders to ensure positive risk reduction outcomes are achieved through targeted prevention activity.

The successful applicant must undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced check and hold a valid car or motorbike driving licence as this is an essential requirement for this role.

Key Responsibilities as our Prevention Officer (Road Safety):

Knowledge:

  • Assist the Road Safety Lead and Road Safety Team with cohesive partnership working in line with DSFRS Road Safety Strategy and Delivery Plan.
  • Maintain comprehensive understanding of existing and emerging road-related risks within our communities.
  • Ensure subject matter expertise for a minimum of one key at-risk road user group in line with our Road Safety Plan.
  • Acquire, maintain, and enhance professional knowledge by networking, attending training courses, and reviewing professional publications.
  • Act as a point of contact for colleagues, partners, and safety professionals.
  • Ensure the effective development and delivery of evidence-based prevention interventions.

Supervision of Advocates:

  • Oversee and actively engage in the day-to-day running of advocate staff, including supporting advocates through induction and training.
  • Monitor the performance of Advocates while delivering risk reduction activities through quality assurance.
  • Oversee and monitor the day-to-day tasks and schedules of advocates.

Evaluation:

  • Report back to the Road Safety Lead and assist in the effective delivery, evaluation, and feedback processes for all interventions.
  • Provide relevant evaluation data and reports to the Road Safety Lead where required.

Collaboration and Event Organisation:

  • Coordinate partnership and multi-agency risk reduction interventions.

Delivery and Partnership Working:

  • Assist with partnership working, including Vision Zero South West and West of England Road Safety Partnership.

Wider Community Safety Activity:

  • Assist the Road Safety Lead and Community Safety team in promoting community safety activities.
  • Generate Home Safety Visit (HSV) referrals.
