We are a 7-partner, 7-salaried GP practice, based in the town centre of Pontypridd, with branches at Tonteg and Ynysybwl. We have a full complement of nurses and pharmacists supported by our receptionist/administrators and practice manager.
We are a training practice with a great ethos for education and promoting a healthy work/life balance.
Job responsibilities
- Provide a range of nursing care to patients referred by other members of the primary care team
- Manage and deliver a comprehensive chronic disease programme - diabetes, respiratory, and CHD providing practical assistance and professional advice ensuring minimum standards of care following appropriate training
- Provide a well-person service including cytology, HRT, contraception, breast awareness following appropriate training
- Perform venepuncture and ECG
- Undertake opportunistic screening and new patient checks
- Undertake wound care/management/dressing techniques
- Administer injections under an individualized prescription or PGD ensuring safe storage, rotation, and disposal of vaccines and drugs
- Carry out ear examination and refer for aural care accordingly
- Offer a holistic approach to health promotion e.g. travel advice, smoking cessation etc
- Provide an immunization and vaccination service
- Provide, upon completion of appropriate training, monitoring of anticoagulation for patients taking oral anticoagulants (INR clinic)
- Provide if appropriately trained an evidence-based minor illness service for patients either face to face or on the telephone
- Support a minor operations service under the supervision of the GP in accordance with the protocol
- Recognise the signs of child abuse, family violence, vulnerable adults, substance abuse, addictive behaviors and suicidal tendencies and maintain awareness of local referral procedures and complete mandatory updates annually
- Apply infection control measures when collecting and handling laboratory specimens, disposal of waste materials, dealing with blood and body fluids and report and treat sharp injuries
- Support the development of nursing procedures/protocols within the practice
- Contribute to clinical governance through participation in risk assessments, audit and research as directed by the lead nurse
- Exercise duties and responsibilities associated with the continuous improvement in quality and standards the clinical governance agenda
- Participate in the administration and professional responsibilities of the practice team and take appropriate action if standards are not met
- Assist in the supervision/assessment/monitoring of nursing students and health care assistants
- Responsible for maintaining own professional development and undertakes annual training and demonstrates competency in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques
- Contribute to achieving practice targets, e.g. Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement
- Contribute to the maintenance of the practice disease registers and maintain clinical records
- Responsible for ensuring the practice medical equipment is managed and stocks in the treatment room are maintained, drawing Health and Safety issues to the attention of the lead nurse.
- Support the development of integrated services within the primary care team
- Provide professional support to the lead nurse
- Alert the Management Team to issues of quality and risk

Qualifications
- NMC Registration
- General Practice Nursing courses, e.g. Warwick Diabetes
- Minor illness trained, preferable

- Experience of working in General Practice
- Experience of working in a nursing team
