An exciting opportunity has arisen to undertake a Senior Clinical Fellowship at the Welsh Centre of Burns and Plastic Surgery, based at Swansea Bay University Health Board with subspecialty interest tailored towards planned interest as a consultant. We are delighted to be able to support fellowships in the following subspecialties: Paediatric Surgery (including hypospadias, vascular anomalies and children's hand surgery), Peripheral Nerve and Brachial Plexus Surgery, Laser, Breast Reconstruction, Sarcoma, Skin Oncology, Perineal/Pelvic Reconstruction or Burns.

We are looking to recruit a keen and enthusiastic new colleague to join a friendly, forward thinking team. This is a post FRCS (plast) peri CCT position for those at the end of training or immediately post CCT who are looking to further perfect their clinical skills ready for consultant life. The post holder will be employed for a 6 month period with a start date of either February or August. Depending upon number of applications we may look to prospectively fill the post for a 12 - 18 month period.

Main duties of the job

Detailed weekly commitments will be agreed at the beginning of the post and may be negotiated locally depending on training needs. This will include a number of MDTs, outpatient clinics and theatre sessions. Fellows will function as an integral part of the team (as dictated by skill and experience) liaising with other members of the MDT, clinicians and patients.

We would expect fellows to be involved in the majority of patient management discussions at MDT, supported by senior clinicians. You will actively participate in the training and supervision of junior doctors and medical students through formal and informal teaching and training opportunities. You will be expected to participate in the management, development and modernisation of the service and to support colleagues in meeting training obligations.

The HB is committed to multi-professional and multi-disciplinary team working and you will be expected to work closely with colleagues both within and outside the HB to achieve this aim.

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.

Although this post is not recognised for training, participation in educational programmes, audit and research will be encouraged and supported. There is an active Multi Professional Education Centre and Medical Staff are encouraged to use its facilities. There are also comprehensive Medical Libraries at all sites managed by Chartered Librarians.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND APTITUDE
Essential

  • Good communication skills, interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Evidence of participation in multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and use initiative
  • Ability to know own limitations and when to seek advice.
  • Meet the requirements of the GMC's Good Medical Practice.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of IT.
  • Basic Surgical Skills course

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING
Essential

  • MRCS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Intention of career path in Plastic Surgery

Desirable

  • Higher professional qualification (or part)

EXPERIENCE
Essential

  • Significant experience in full time hospital practice at trainee/SpR level.
  • Involvement in audit and research projects.
  • Computer/IT/Research skills

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in Plastic Surgery at SpR level.
  • Teaching skills
  • Experience of research
  • Publications in relevant journals
