Job description

We are seeking a Post Doc Physicist to work for a technology company in Cambridgeshire specialising in the development of advanced materials.

JOB PURPOSE

Based within the materials development team, you will investigate topics such as high thermal conductivity materials for ICT, semiconductor patterning materials, and materials for decarbonisation of heating and cooling. The aim is to develop a strong understanding of the fundamental performance of these materials through experimentation, application of theoretical principles and the development and testing of hypotheses. This in-depth understanding will be used by the wider team to develop improved materials for the applications under study.

MAIN ACTIVITIES
  1. Working closely within a project team responsible for understanding and developing new materials which meet application specifications. Testing both newly developed and existing materials. Evaluation of experimental results against current theoretical understanding, material modelling and literature precedent.
  2. Developing new theories and hypotheses for, and recommendations for improvements of, material performance.
  3. Developing novel experimental techniques to improve material or application understanding compared with standard techniques.
  4. Developing processes for material deposition and processing which can be used to test material properties or optimise performance.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED
Essential
  1. A Physics or Electrical Engineering degree and a PhD in a related field.
  2. A strong academic record in physics, including an understanding of the fundamentals of theories that govern material properties.
Desirable
  1. Experience of incorporating materials into test structures to demonstrate desired functional properties.
  2. Experience of modelling material properties or their performance in device structures.
  3. A demonstrable interest in developing technical solutions across a range of applications.
  4. An appreciation of the commercial dimension of industrial R&D.
