About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Portfolio Investment Manager (Financial Modelling) to join our growing team in London.

The primary part of this role will be the responsibility for developing and analysing financial models to support the sales and bid teams on new tenders for the Urban Fox business. The role plays a crucial role in ensuring our bids are competitive, profitable, and aligned with the company's strategic objectives.

What you'll be doing

As a Portfolio Investment Manager (Financial Modelling) you will be responsible for:

  • Developing financial models for new tenders, including updating cost estimates, pricing strategies, and profit margin analysis.
  • Analysing tender documents and the client’s requirements to ensure models accurately reflect project scope, risks, and deliverables.
  • Providing scenario and sensitivity analysis to evaluate the impact of different pricing and costing strategies on bid competitiveness and profitability.
  • Collaborating with the sales, bid and operations teams to gather accurate cost data.
  • Calculating and proposing optimal pricing strategies that balance competitiveness with profitability.
  • Assessing and incorporating risk factors, contingencies, and potential variations in project execution into the financial models.
  • Working closely with the bid team to understand the bid objectives and ensure that financial models align with the overall bid strategy.
  • Participating in bid review meetings, presenting financial analysis and providing insights to support decision-making.
  • Supporting the bid team in preparing shareholder approval papers.

UK Portfolio Management

The role will also assist the UK Portfolio Management team in its activities including carrying out financial analysis and shareholder value enhancement. It will also include contributing and participating in the preparation of periodic senior management reporting and documentation to secure stakeholder (e.g. shareholder and senior funder) approvals and consents.

This role has a wide reach across several functions/teams within Balfour Beatty Investments and the successful candidate will have to liaise with new business, operations, finance, and commercial.

Operational assets

  • Analysis of performance and cashflow in existing assets.
  • Analysis of compliance with project finance documentation.
  • Input to and management of the various portfolio management tools/databases.
  • Reconciliation of actual performance to bid models, and understanding variances.
  • Monitoring of operational projects against upsides.
  • Refinancing analysis.
  • Contractual review of funding documents.
  • Preparation of monthly management reports.
  • Preparation/review of shareholder (and other stakeholder) approval documentation.

Who we're looking for

Professional Profile, Skills and Experience:

  • Graduate, with a reasonable period working in a professional environment.
  • Outstanding written skills and grammar.
  • Advanced Excel skills, with a desire to learn complex financial modelling in Excel.
  • Experience of working with databases and PowerBI would also be advantageous.
  • Accounting and finance knowledge preferred.
  • An interest in reading contracts and summarising the purpose of key passages.

  • Highly numerate, ability to reason mathematically.
  • Must be proactive, self-motivated and able to bring original thought.
  • Able to grasp complex tasks, clarify as necessary and own the task through to completion.
  • Good inter-personal skills.
  • Strong and effective communication skills, including writing and spoken to peers, senior management and non-technical colleagues.
  • Good at working under pressure and able to strike the right balance between taking the initiative and working individually, and consulting with others when problems/challenges arise.
  • Must be flexible and must be able to complete priority tasks to a high standard on schedule.
