Police Custody Detention Officers

Location: Hertfordshire – Stevenage & Hatfield custody suites

Permanent, full-time (37 hours a week) shift pattern, including nights and weekends.

Starting salary circa £35,526 inclusive of shift allowance

We’re excited to be recruiting on behalf of Hertfordshire Constabulary and bring to you this exciting opportunity to join the force as a Police Custody Detention Officer.

The custody units are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The custody department is managed collaboratively by a senior management team who manage custody units across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

The role: Police Custody Detention Officers

Working as part of a team supporting custody Sergeants, Detention Officers carry out a multi-functional role within very busy custody units.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that persons in police detention are afforded their rights and entitlements and are cared for and treated ethically and in accordance with legislation and Home Office rules.
  • The reception of police detainees involving the creation of computer records to book persons into police custody and the recording of actions and activities during detention.
  • Ensuring the welfare needs of detainees are met through the development and implementation of a care plan.
  • Taking fingerprints, DNA and photographs of detainees.
  • Maintenance of custody, including safety checks and cleanliness of the facility.

Key skills, knowledge, and experience required: Police Custody Detention Officers

Successful candidates will be able to display the following:

  • The candidate will need to consider themselves physically fit enough to pass a medical assessment
  • An ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An ability to treat individuals fairly, regardless of circumstance.
  • An ability to work as part of a team.

Fully paid training to carry out the role will be provided.

Successful candidates will complete a five-week training programme ( this will be in different locations around the BHC) followed by a period of mentoring in the workplace.
