Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Phlebotomist to join our busy surgery and work alongside our fantastic team of clinicians at Belgrave Medical Centre.

A caring yet firm and calm approach is vital as is excellent communication skills and a passion for improving services for patients. Strong communication skills are essential, along with strong IT skills and experience of EMIS.

This post holder is required for the collection of venous blood samples for pathological analysis. The post holder will be required to work independently and as part of a team when required. They will be asked to liaise with other health care professionals, clinicians, and patients.

This is an interesting and important job; previous experience in this field is not essential but desirable, and full training will be provided.

The hours are 18 hours over 4 days:

  1. Monday 08:00 - 13:00
  2. Tuesday: Day off
  3. Wednesday 13:00 - 16:30
  4. Thursday and Friday 08:00 - 13:00

Salary negotiable dependent upon experience.

Main Duties of the Job

The following are the main core responsibilities of the role of Phlebotomist. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Achieve and maintain proficiency in the phlebotomy process.
  • Carry out blood specimens by performing venepuncture using aseptic non-touch technique and follow practice protocols.
  • Ensure that all samples are dispatched to the appropriate path lab.
  • Ensure that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff.

About Us

We currently have 14,600 patients with a clinical team of 6 GPs, 2 Pharmacists, 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners, 5 Practice Nurses, 1 Phlebotomist, 1 HCA, and an admin team of 18.

We use the EMIS Web clinical system.

We are a teaching practice and support medical students and GP registrars during their training.

The practice is keen on research and participates in several research programmes taking place with the Keele Research team.

Job Responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Achieve and maintain proficiency in the phlebotomy process.
  • Work in an efficient manner to ensure that phlebotomy work is completed in the best practical time.
  • Carry out blood specimens by performing venepuncture using aseptic non-touch technique and following practice procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication.
  • Inform the patient or carer of the phlebotomy process and put them at ease.
  • Obtain informed consent from the patient to treatment and the sharing of information, documenting in accordance with practice procedures.
  • Use documentation to record planned care and feedback any significant change in patients' condition to the clinical team as necessary.
  • Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed.
  • Maintain accurate computerised records at all times.
  • Be responsible for clearing and re-stocking the consulting room both clinically and for administrative purposes, ensuring information kept in rooms is up to date.
  • Actively participate in clinical audit and service improvement activity to improve patient care and patient outcomes.
  • Be accountable for own actions and decisions demonstrating the ability to seek advice and guidance from the Nurse Practitioner.
  • Maintain own continuing professional development.
  • Participate in personal training, development, appraisal, and attend all relevant training courses as required.
  • Chaperone and assist patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician.
  • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by GPs.
  • Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate.
  • Adhere to all practice policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Comply with the standards set out in the contract of employment.
  • Undertake any other duties as appropriate to the role.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Good Standard of General Education.
  • Experience of working with the general public.
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes.
  • Ability to follow clinical policy and procedures.
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment.

£11,928.58 a year. Annual rate based on 18 hours per week.
