PhD Research Scientist - Biotechnology required on a permanent basis in Manchester.

Requiring a PhD in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry (or similar), with an understanding of cell cultivation for producing metabolites, and knowledge of metabolic pathways and enzymes. An interest in personal care products and markets is desirable. Knowledge and/or experience of extraction techniques from natural sources is also desirable.

Location: Manchester

Salary: £30,000 - £40,000 per annum (dependent on experience)

SRG are working with a highly innovative company who have been creating speciality products for a range of markets, including personal care and cosmetics, for over 30 years. They are seeking a PhD Research Scientist to support in developing natural speciality ingredients from both microbiological and plant sources to launch into the personal care market, specifically hair care.

This is an exciting new role, in a growing and developing team, with ideal candidates having recently completed a PhD in Biology, Biotechnology or Biochemistry (or similar), with knowledge of cell cultivation for producing metabolites, and knowledge of metabolic pathways and enzymes. Candidates with an MSc and proven industrial experience in a research role are also encouraged to apply. Knowledge and/or experience of extraction techniques from natural sources is also desirable.

Role / Description

  1. Develop natural hair care ingredients for the applications team to test.
  2. Design and develop processes for the extraction from plant and other bio-based sources to make hair care ingredients.
  3. Design and develop microbial fermentation processes for the production and purification of hair care ingredients.
  4. Develop technical transfer packages for commercial production of ingredients and assist in process transfer.
  5. Conduct analysis using techniques such as HPLC, MS and enzymatic assays.
  6. Plan and progress projects to ensure successful completion.
  7. Accurately record experimental data and produce formal reports.
  8. Confidently present data to technical and non-technical audience.
  9. Provide technical assistance to other departments in the business, for example participating in discussions with sales, applications and quality teams to aid product development and launch.
  10. Keep up to date with current academic literature and market developments.

Requirements

  1. PhD in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry (or similar).
  2. An MSc with proven industrial experience in research will also be considered.
  3. Understanding of cell cultivation for production of metabolites and/or cell lysates.
  4. Experience and knowledge of metabolic pathways and enzymes.
  5. Experience and knowledge of developing bio-processes.
  6. Understanding of aseptic technique.
  7. Knowledge and/or experience of extraction techniques from natural sources is desirable.
