Job description

The Pharmacy Dept. at Southmead is a forward-thinking, dynamic, and innovative team with a strong clinical and patient focus. Aiming to provide new exciting opportunities, we are excited to invite an enthusiastic & driven Patient Services Lead to join our ever-expanding Patient Services team.

This blended Medicines Optimisation and Dispensary post balances Medicines Management and Dispensary in a rotational manner, providing an excellent opportunity to learn and develop in a supportive environment. With the forward-thinking aim of moving towards ward-based services.

The successful candidate will have good communication skills and be able to manage and guide all patient services staff who are of various skill levels with proven experience in leadership and mentoring of teams.

North Bristol Trust is moving towards a ward-based working structure; this post is designed to help facilitate this change and move NBT towards a decentralised service, putting pharmacy processes closer to the patients and enabling a more efficient patient journey towards discharge.

The vacancy is an evolving role to facilitate the implementation of ward-based working, and we are hopeful to attract a successful candidate with experience in change management and managing teams through times of change. The successful candidate should be open to implementing new processes while supporting staff and managing the needs of the organisation.

Main duties of the job

Patient Services teams facilitate an effective service both within the ward-based and dispensary-based services. The successful candidate will ensure that all procedures and processes relating to labelling, dispensing, and checking medication requests are robust and adhered to, whilst ensuring workflow is completed in accordance with departmental KPI targets.

The post holder will support the Patient Services Manager in the provision of all operational aspects of the dispensary and medicines management services, deputising as necessary in management of the services. Aside from facilitating the rapid discharge of patients from the hospital, the post holder will ensure that Pharmacy and the Trust meet their objectives with regards to TTA request turnaround times, ensuring adherence to the Trust's WDA license requirements in the provision of named patient and CD supply to WDA customers.

The successful candidate will ensure that all staff work to a high standard, providing quality pharmacy services to patients and multidisciplinary staff interacting with the Patient Services team.

Strong IT skills are required within the role to ensure that operating systems can be used, and data extracted and presented to aid continuous service development and improvement.

Person Specification

Education/Training/Qualifications

  • BTEC National Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or approved equivalent qualification
  • Registered Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Leadership and Management Qualification
  • Evidence of continued CPD
  • IT competencies equivalent to ELTE/ECDL, including experience of using specific Pharmacy stock control and ordering systems such as Ascribe/EMIS, JAC, HP etc.
  • Sickness Management Accreditation

Work Experience

  • Extensive experience in hospital pharmacy
  • Operational Management
  • Experience of managing a team (3 or more members in a Team) and multidisciplinary working
  • Experience of writing and developing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Understanding of current medicines management practices and dispensary practices
  • Experience of project management and service improvement
  • Experience of change operational management and root cause analysis
  • Experience of internal and external audit

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Legislation
  • Substantial post-qualified experience working as a Pharmacy Technician in an Acute UK Hospital, with experience of a supervisory/management role at Band 5, or above.
  • Ability to plan personal and departmental workload on both short (days) and long term (months)
  • Ability to be flexible and maintain objectivity when under pressure
  • Knowledge of current Patient Services practices and legislation
  • Knowledge and understanding of Wholesale Distribution Authorisation (WDA) for Medicinal Products
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems and QA applications, such a Q-PULSE.

  • Staff are required to work any combination of hours between 08:00 am - 19:00 pm. Shift patterns will be allocated once appointed and will include weekend working on a rotational basis
