Job summary

Pharmacy Assistant Technical Officer Developmental Post

Band: 2 to 3

Hours: Full time

This post is a pharmacy assistant technical officer fixed term 2 year training and development post. This will begin at a band 2 grade, and will allow for entry without previous pharmacy experience or a NVQ level 2. On successful completion of the pharmacy NVQ level 2 course, you will move to a permanent band 3 role. Details of the course are included in the additional document section.

This post is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to become an integral part of our replenishment team. We are looking for someone with a professional outlook and dedication to providing a high standard service.

To work as part of the Pharmacy Team in providing an efficient, effective, and safe pharmaceutical service to patients and customers, including ward stock top-up to wards and departments, and for community hospitals, where appropriate. To dispense in accordance with departmental and Trust standards, in conjunction with UHL clinical governance objectives and those of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a pharmacy replenishment service to wards and departments, agreeing alterations to stock levels in liaison with pharmacy technicians, pharmacists and ward sisters, to ensure adequate stock holdings. To ensure that all stock is put away appropriately.
  • To assemble orders received from all sources ensuring they are booked out on the computer and charged to the correct department, picked promptly, accurately and checked and are securely packed for delivery in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • To maintain and review drug 'to-follows' to ensure an effective system of replenishment drug supply, through effective communication with relevant pharmacy and ward staff.
  • To assist with returning drugs via the computer system including returned stocks and disposing of expired or unwanted items, in accordance with departmental procedures, maximising drug usage and financial resource.
  • To assist in the receipt of all goods, including recording all receipts, issues, batch numbers, expiry dates and other relevant information, onto the pharmacy computer system ensuring that all transactions are entered promptly and accurately in order to maintain accurate departmental stock. To assist in checking stock levels and expiry dates to minimise stock-outs and waste.
  • The post will involve late, weekend and bank holiday cover on a rota basis.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • To assemble drugs in cardiac arrest boxes recording batch numbers, expiry dates, ward usage and other relevant information in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • To initiate orders for and maintain a continuous supply of medicine bottles, containers, bags, spoons, computer labels and other consumables in the Dispensary.
  • To maintain standards of safety, tidiness and cleanliness within the department in accordance with COSHH and Health and Safety regulations. To ensure all working practices and Standard Operating Procedures are followed.
  • To assist the Senior Technicians for Replenishment and Stores in the co-ordination of the Drug Hazard/Recall procedure in the event of a drug recall, where appropriate.
  • To assist in the training of all staff as appropriate ensuring systems and procedures are understood and standards achieved.
  • To provide dispensing support in line with NVQ level 2 progression, under support and supervision.
  • To undertake such other reasonable duties as may be required from time to time.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • GCSE English, Maths grade C

Desirable:

  • QCF/NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Pharmacy Services

Communication and relationship skills

  • Good written and verbal skills

  • Experience of dealing with customers
