Job Overview
Are you seeking a dynamic, challenging and rewarding job role in the perioperative practice education team, a team that values knowledge and clinical skills?

The perioperative practice education team has an exciting opportunity to welcome applications for a band 6 perioperative practice educator. This is an ideal vacancy for an enthusiastic and committed theatre practitioner, registered nurse or ODP interested in education. This post gives the opportunity to support learners, including new recruits, student nurses, student ODPs, trainee nurse associates, theatre support workers and practitioners in the division.

You will have the opportunity to work within the education team including cross sites, to plan and participate in the delivery of teaching and training sessions, along with education in the surgical division to a high standard, as well as higher educational institutes and other divisions within the trust.

This full time post requires the successful candidate to work 50% in an education role and 50% in clinical practice, on a flexible basis.

The applicant needs to be passionate about perioperative education, have relevant experience in perioperative and theatre practice, have knowledge of perioperative policies and procedures, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to prioritise and plan their workload, and organise their allocated time in education to reflect the needs of the surgical division, also demonstrate an invested interest in education and professional development.

The successful candidate will work with the wider perioperative practice education team, and will be assisting with educational and professional development of all students, new learners and staff; this includes the induction of new recruits.

It is an essential requirement that the candidate has a teaching and assessing qualification (Mentorship or Practice Assessor), a motivation for excellence, and an ability to influence the safety of patient care, professional development, and team dynamics.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • To work with the Perioperative Team Leader for practice education.
  • To identify and promote evidence-based clinical practice within the perioperative division and theatre departments, through the implementation and facilitation of clinically based teaching / education, to ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles competently.
  • Work alongside all members of the perioperative practice education team to assist in the development of quality Theatre Induction and Competency programmes.
  • Assist in the delivery of an educational programme for staff new to the Theatre environment and in the perioperative division, incorporating theoretical teaching, clinical skills assessment and formulation of personal development plans for anaesthetics, scrub roles, recovery and theatre admissions.
  • Participate in the implementation and delivery of education and training programmes and modules for all staff to promote evidence-based and high-quality care.
  • To manage the allocation and placement of learners.
Management / Organisational
  • Assist in development and implementation of education strategies across all the operating theatre departments in order that staff are equipped with the right skills.
  • Attend meetings as required by TLPPE for perioperative directorate.
  • Assist in the general recruitment of staff for operating theatres and in particular the recruitment of staff for educational programmes.
  • Assist the TLPPE in the identification and coordination of education and professional development requirements of new staff and existing staff both nursing and Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs).
  • Deputise for TLPPE when required as representative for operating theatre, anaesthetic and recovery practice at the Practice Development Forum.
  • Deputise for TLPPE when required as Trust representative at Universities of Brighton, Canterbury, Portsmouth, Chichester and other institutes affiliated with education in the division, on the Perioperative course working group, contributing to curriculum development and course delivery.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the statutory and mandatory training required by nursing, ODP and support staff working in own theatre department utilising administrative assistance for same. Assist practice educators as directed by TLPPE on training plans and the standardisation of accurate data records according to Trust policy.
  • To work within the NMC Code of Conduct/HCPC Code at all times and adhere to health and safety legislation.
  • Assist with the development of preceptorship programmes for all new peri-operative practitioners.
  • Preparation and delivery of teaching sessions across the perioperative division.
  • Allocation and management of student nurses and liaise with higher educational institutes in the absence of the Lead Mentor.
Leadership
  • Be a positive role model to colleagues and junior staff on clinical and professional standards of peri-operative practice.
  • Use initiative and discretion to manage workload independently. Accountable within Trust policies and procedures.
  • Provide feedback and educational counselling to nursing, ODP, learners and support staff in relation to their appraisal, professional and personal development; assist staff in formulating personal development plans and portfolios.
  • Work alongside TLPPE/lead Theatre Practitioner/ theatre managers and team leaders to develop standards and guidelines to support training and development of staff.
  • Act as an expert to other healthcare professionals, providing specialist clinical advice, guidance and support. Be responsible for initiating and directing best practice and acting as a professional role model.
  • Safeguard the health, safety and welfare of staff, patients and visitors. Responsibility for staff training in the use of key equipment in the peri-operative environment.
  • Work with TLPPE and other departmental practice educators to formulate strategies to ensure consistency of practice across different theatre departments.
Clinical
  • Provide highly specialist perioperative care to patients undergoing surgery within the operating theatre departments.
  • Act as a resource for staff in operating theatres, offer expert tuition, support and guidance to nursing, ODP, new learners and support staff. This role demands expert knowledge, gained through extensive acute clinical experience, together with theoretical study at a minimum of post-registration level.
  • Act as a role model both educationally and clinically, ensuring standards are met in clinical practice.
  • Be highly skilled and dextrous, working with technical and complex equipment and machinery.
  • Have the technical expertise to act as a trainer for medical devices and equipment, training nursing, ODP staff and new learners.
