Job summary

We are recruiting for a Payroll Team Leader who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

We are looking for a Payroll Team Leader with a passion for providing excellent customer service, exceptional telephone manner, and excellent administrative and IT skills. The candidate should be driven to motivate and guide team members to deliver outstanding service to our employees and stakeholders.

Demonstrating outstanding attention to detail and possessing prominent knowledge in current UK payroll legislation is essential. The ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines while being flexible to changing business needs is crucial. Knowledge of NHS terms and conditions and experience of Oracle or ESR is highly desirable.

Main duties of the job

  1. Reporting to Payroll & Assistant Payroll Manager to ensure the successful running of the team payroll, providing high quality customer service, ensuring the payrolls are processed correctly and on time.
  2. Managing and supervising existing payroll and pension team members.
  3. Working with other Team Leaders, Payroll Officers & Pension Officers to ensure that staff are paid accurately and in line with both HMRC legislation and NHS Policy.
  4. Training, coaching, and advising payroll team members about payroll and pension issues.
  5. Able to manually calculate complex calculations which include cross tax-year Tax, NI and Pension deductions and refunds.
  6. Processing payroll runs, supplementary runs, and reversals when necessary.

Person Specification

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Strong knowledge of pay procedures and UK statutory legislation.
  • Experience of working in a large fast-paced Payroll/Pensions environment, preferably in a shared service environment.

Desirable

  • Proven ability to mentor and develop a team.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders.

Skills

Essential

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Manual Payroll Calculations in UK Tax, NI, Pensions, and other statutory deductions.

Desirable

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft packages, specifically Excel with the ability to use VLOOKUPs, Pivots, Mail Merges, and Macros.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of NHS conditions of Pay, NHS Travel and Expenses Regulations, NHS Pension Regulations, Calculation of PAYE, and NHS working practices.
  • Experience of Oracle ESR system.

Desirable

  • Working knowledge in an NHS or local government payroll department.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs including Maths & English at Grades 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent qualifications.

Desirable

  • NVQ Level 5 / CIPP / IPPM Qualification.
  • ECDL.
