Job Title: Payroll Manager
Location: Leeds - Office Based
Salary: Up to £48,000 + Benefits

About the Role

We're seeking a dynamic and experienced Payroll Manager to lead our clients payroll operations. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll, maintaining comprehensive records, resolving discrepancies, and ensuring full compliance with all relevant legal and tax obligations. This is a fantastic opportunity to drive process improvements, manage payroll projects, and collaborate closely with our HR and Operations teams.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Processing & Management

  1. Timely Payroll Execution: Process monthly/weekly payroll accurately for salaried and hourly staff, including handling overtime, premiums, and ad-hoc payments.
  2. Record Maintenance: Keep up-to-date payroll records, managing employee starters, leavers, and detail changes (e.g., salary increases, benefits).
Issue Resolution & Stakeholder Support
  1. Point of Contact: Serve as the primary contact for payroll-related queries from employees, managers, and other stakeholders.
  2. Problem Solving: Investigate and resolve any payroll discrepancies such as pay errors, tax code issues, or pension contribution queries.
Project Management & Process Optimization
  1. Project Leadership: Lead payroll-related projects from planning through to delivery, ensuring projects are completed on time and within scope.
  2. System Integration: Collaborate with Operations and HR to integrate payroll systems with other business functions, including finance and time and attendance systems.
  3. Continuous Improvement: Assist in implementing new technologies and best practices to enhance payroll accuracy and efficiency.
Compliance & Regulatory Adherence
  1. Regulatory Updates: Keep abreast of and ensure compliance with the latest UK payroll legislation and tax regulations including PAYE, NIC, RTI, and NMW.
  2. Audit & Risk Management: Conduct audits and risk assessments related to payroll processes and project implementations.
Data Analysis & Reporting
  1. Analytical Insight: Analyse payroll data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  2. Business Case Development: Develop and present proposals for new payroll initiatives based on thorough data analysis.
Team Leadership & Management
  1. Coaching & Support: Lead and mentor your team to achieve excellent service delivery.
  2. Performance Management: Monitor team performance through regular PDRs and SMART objectives, and manage team attendance and timekeeping.

  1. Proven Experience: Demonstrable experience in managing payroll processes for a diverse workforce, including both salaried and hourly staff.
  2. Project Management Skills: Ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring efficient planning, execution, and delivery.
  3. Attention to Detail: Strong focus on accuracy, compliance, and continuous process improvement.
  4. Stakeholder Engagement: Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively resolve issues and collaborate across departments.
  5. Leadership: Experience in managing, coaching, and motivating a team to deliver high-quality results.
