Job description

Deputy Food Retail Manager
Part-time (20 hrs per week)
We are a busy not-for-profit organisation and have a rewarding opportunity in an unusual food retail setting. The role supports and provides cover for our Food Hub Manager. Foodkind is an environmental organisation which collects surplus food from supermarket partners to share with the public. From our Northampton hub, we run a community store (Shop Zero), prepare emergency food parcels, and support charitable organisations with food. Training in safeguarding and H&S is provided. This role will help ensure our volunteer workers are supported; that the projects run efficiently to the highest standard of food safety and that our hundreds of clients are supported during the cost-of-living crisis.

The Role:
  1. To help process incoming food deliveries, prepare food for the shop and deliveries out, and to keep the shop well stocked.
  2. To ensure the safety of staff, volunteers, and customers and always work to our safeguarding policy.
  3. Ensure our hub is run safely and securely for volunteers and the public.
  4. Help update and follow our risk assessments and compliance records.
  5. Comply with health and safety rules and food care regulations at all times.
  6. Guide and train volunteers of all backgrounds and help manage the rota.
  7. Maintain an inclusive and welcoming approach in our charitable community.
  8. Provide a positive and welcoming approach to the public.
  9. Help interview new volunteers and help manage the volunteer database.
  10. Assist with social media posts for our shop sessions.
  11. Oversee the cleaning and other management processes.
  12. Advise the governing board on any updates or concerns about the CIC.
  13. Follow the processes regarding waste management, freezer/chiller, temperature regulations, and other tasks to maintain our high EHO rating.
Essential Experience:
  1. Food retail experience.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of food safety and allergy issues.
  3. Management of other people in previous or current roles.
  4. Be prepared and available to work over the seasonal period.
  5. IT literate, able to perform basic database and social media tasks.
Helpful Experience:
  1. Volunteer management or previous third sector experience (either professionally or your own volunteering role).
  2. Understand food waste and environmental issues.
