We are proud to publish prize-winning, industry-recognised writers at the top of their game, such as Percival Everett and Charlotte Mendelson alongside influencers with impressive social platforms like Alice Loxton and Katarina Johnson-Thompson. We even publish world leaders, with forthcoming books from Angela Merkel, Jacinda Ardern and Nicola Sturgeon. We are a small team, with a strength belied by our size. Tightly focused, we work closely and have powerfully personal relationships with our authors, their agents and everyone who sells their books.

Your role:
As the Communications Director for Marketing, you will lead our talented, award-winning marketing team, and be responsible for the creation and management of a consumer-focused and ROI-driven marketing strategy for lead titles and brands. You will work closely with the Managing Director, the Communications Director – Publicity, and Publishers to bring audience and market knowledge to our publishing and help shape a growth-oriented programme, with the ultimate goals of creating bestsellers and generating sales and market share.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Develop and direct a strategic communications vision for marketing that aligns with Pan’s business strategy and enhances brand reputation.

  • Foster a high-performing marketing team, prioritising talent development and performance management, and driving a culture of peak performance and inclusion.

  • Manage the marketing budget efficiently, ensuring strategic alignment across departments to achieve strong ROI.

  • Alongside other members of the Pan Strategic Management Committee, be accountable for Pan’s commercial success while being a collaborator and influencer on the publishing and business strategy.

  • Execute high-impact marketing campaigns, focusing on innovation and measurable KPIs and integrating marketing with publicity to bolster author and brand profiles.

  • Lead the ongoing development, roll out and use of audience segmentation for Pan.

  • Represent the division at high-profile author/agent pitches and meetings, inspiring excitement and confidence in what the team can offer.

  • Leverage digital and AI advancements to transform communications functions, ensuring Pan remains at the forefront of industry standards and practices.

  • Contribute to the ‘Pan Macmillan Making a Difference’ mission—focusing on DEI, literacy, and sustainability—by setting an example for your team and demonstrating your commitment to our DEI strategy and objectives while creating an inclusive environment.

Essential experience, abilities and knowledge you’ll need to succeed:

  • The ability to distil the creative essence of a book and originate campaigns that effectively deliver that message to the target audience.

  • A proven background in developing and executing comprehensive marketing within the publishing industry, with proven successes in brand-building and delivering excellent campaigns to budget and deadline.

  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role, showing capability in steering and inspiring teams towards achieving shared business objectives and fostering a dynamic and innovative work environment.

  • Ability to conceive and implement strategic plans that align with the company’s overarching goals and objectives, with a track record of driving growth and enhancing brand visibility.

  • Expertise in enhancing audience engagement and driving book sales, along with experience in measuring campaign impact.

  • Skilled in working collaboratively with various stakeholders, including publishers, authors, illustrators and sales teams, to create cohesive and impactful communications strategies that enhance the publishing programme and business results.

This is a full-time, permanent role, and will be based in our offices in Farringdon, London, with some flexibility to work from home each week.
