Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist B6 Universal/Targeted Post
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust

We are seeking a passionate, innovative and motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our Childrens Speech and Language Therapy Team. We are looking for an individual who demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with a passion for delivering high standards of care in the heart of the community.

The role will be to support the development and delivery of the targeted and universal levels of the speech and language therapy service in line with current commission requirements.

To audit and review outcomes for stakeholders and children accessing targeted and universal speech and language therapy service levels.

To propose service developments which make best use of available resources and reduce duplication across agencies.

Main duties of the job

To promote interagency work to ensure all children have appropriate language and communication opportunities to reach their desired outcomes.

Share expertise related to key messages and to model best practice with colleagues, families and practitioners.

To undertake effective and holistic assessment of children referred to understand the functional impact of any speech, language or communication need and the service role in addressing this need.

To coordinate the management of a clinical caseload of children identified as meeting criteria for targeted level response.

Management of specialist clinical caseload in line with service demands.

To establish individualised management and treatment plans, using advanced clinical reasoning and utilising a wide range of evidence based treatment skills and options to formulate highly specialised interventions and programmes of care.

To promote health and reduce inequalities for children, young people, families and communities, so that they may be able to maximise their potential in terms of health, education and social well-being.

Provide supervision to colleagues which facilitates a culture of learning and reflective practice.

Identify audit/research opportunities, initiating, designing and implementing projects and resulting recommendations/service development proposals.

To work as a member of the integrated team for children throughout the district to ensure high quality coordinated patient care.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Registered with HCPC
  • On-going membership with the RCSLT
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools relevant to the client group.
  • In depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to a diverse client group) and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits.
  • Working knowledge of assessment and therapy materials, including alternative communication strategies.
  • Awareness of the standards of clinical record keeping.
  • Knowledge of educational policies and procedures relating to working practice as a therapist working in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of augmentative communication e.g. signing, picture exchange systems.
Skills and Aptitudes
  • Ability to manage own time, prioritise tasks and work independently to manage communication impairments using relevant policies and specialist knowledge to inform and make clinical decisions and judgements.
  • Ability to manage a caseload spread around a large rural area which involves driving long distances in possible adverse weather and road conditions to meet the needs of patients in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to auditory, perceptual and observational skills together with specialist knowledge, underpinned by current evidence based practice to assess, make differential diagnosis, structure clear care plans and adopt practices to meet individual circumstances.
  • Ability to use analytical and judgement skills, involving information, which requires analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options, in order to diagnose, treat and formulate solutions to a range of communication disorders.
  • Ability to use highly developed communication skills for communicating and understanding complex, sensitive and contentious information in a verbal or written form where they may be significant barriers to acceptance and understanding which need to be overcome, using negotiation, influencing, persuasive, empathic or reassurance skills.
  • Ability to sustain intense concentration on a frequent basis in all aspects of patient management.
  • Ability to multi-task on a frequent basis, e.g. analyse data, compile reports with distractions and frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to deal with consequences of occasional exposure to the emotional consequences of working with distressing conditions.
  • Ability to work in unpleasant conditions on a frequent basis related to client e.g. dealing with secretions, verbal aggression, etc.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort frequently, for short periods during each day.
  • Skills are required to make formal presentations.
Personal Circumstances
  • Ability to travel independently to variety of locations to deliver service.
