Job summary

Are you passionate, highly motivated, and passionate about ultrasound? If so, we have an exciting opportunity within the radiology department at Birmingham Children's hospitals, for a Band 8a Paediatric Clinical Specialist Sonographer to support the in-patient ultrasound service.

The role is for an independent, highly specialised, autonomous reporting clinical specialist paediatric sonographer.

Consideration will be given to suitably qualified sonographers who require additional training in paediatrics, including clinically complex and specialised examinations.

Main duties of the job

To work as an independent, highly specialised, autonomous reporting clinical specialist sonographer performing a range of highly complex paediatric ultrasound examinations to an exceptional standard, and produce high quality, independent reports ensuring compliance with imaging protocols and contribute to the management of the patient. (This complexity of ultrasound imaging and interpretation is performed by a consultant radiologist at other local and paediatric hospitals and was previously undertaken by consultant radiologists at Birmingham Children's Hospital e.g., liver transplantation, oncology and ED ultrasound). In this manner, delivering a safe, effective and efficient service that meets both patient/families/carers, and staff requirements and the Vision of Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Person Specification

Qualification

Essential

  • BSc Honours Diagnostic Radiography or DCRR
  • Masters level Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent (CASE accredited)
  • HCPC Registered
  • Specialist knowledge of paediatric ultrasound, underpinned by theory and post graduate experience
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of the audit process and participation in departmental audit
  • Evidence of personal and professional development
  • Teaching and training skills with the ability to adapt training style to the needs of the trainee
  • Awareness of clinical governance issues relating to patient care
  • Decisive, using sound judgment in decision making and delivering in a timely and confident manner
  • Able to communicate US findings to a clinical specialised multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and escalate significant and unexpected findings when delays may have a negative impact on the Patient
  • Stamina to concentrate and work for extended periods of time (RSI risks)
  • Must be able to work independently and be competent to write a concise and accurate diagnostic ultrasound report
Desirable

  • Ability to use and act on own initiative
  • High level of work organization, self-motivation, drive for performance and improvement
  • PACS, RIS, IEP and IT experience with advanced Microsoft knowledge
