Job Description

Operations Manager - Northfleet

To oversee and manage all aspects of the Northfleet waste transfer station and bulk liquid storage tanks operations with the introduction of visual management, workplace organisation, 5S to help drive continuous Improvement and to ensure the safe, efficient and effective day to day running.

Responsible for developing budget and delivering the cost control required to help meet profit targets, growth plans for the operations in alignment with strategic objectives of the wider business. Specific focus will include operational safety and efficiency, personnel development and performance, project management, asset performance and maintenance, change control process, supplier and contractor safety performance. Ensure all operations are documented within management systems including ISO9001, 14001 and 45001.

Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety and Environmental Compliance
  1. To ensure all site activities are compliant with Environmental Permit and health and safety requirements.
  2. Lead and consistently promote a positive and high standard health and safety culture.
  3. Ensure safe, compliant and efficient utilisation of all operational assets.
  4. Investigate and promote the reporting of Near Misses helping create a safe working environment for all site users.
Operations
  1. Evaluate and continually monitor operational performance, with clear KPI’s across all operational activities.
  2. Monitor all waste Inputs and outputs, via the use of a value mapping stream.
  3. Drive efficient performance management across all operational activities.
  4. Complete daily dynamic meetings, reporting feedback via the 6C review board.
  5. Working closely with the Transport team and external third parties, ensuring that all loads are accepted in a timely manner with a customer service focus.
  6. Responsible for performance review via the means of standard operation reviews.
  7. Coordinate on site operational projects to ensure consistent priorities and approach for all operators.
  8. Responsibility for asset management and maintenance, including a register for safety critical equipment.
  9. Drive continuous Improvement across the plant via the Planned Preventative Maintenance Schedule.
  10. Develop and encourage a culture of continuous improvement and consistency across all sites, setting and tracking progress against clear objectives.
  11. Establish proactive maintenance regimes to maximise plant uptime and performance / life of assets.
  12. Prepare CAPEX submissions and supporting business plans for approval as part of annual budget.
Commercial
  1. Responsible for the operational P&L.
  2. Responsible for delivery of operating targets both operational and financial.
  3. Challenge all cost, delivery and quality targets.
Communications and teamwork
  1. Foster a culture of collaboration and clear communication within and outside of the operations team.
  2. Work cross functionally, particularly with Compliance and Transport teams.
Leadership
  1. Develop a high performing team culture.
  2. Provide strong leadership for operations team.
  3. Set clear objectives and targets for operations team, ensure regular reviews.
  4. Accountable for the performance management and development of employees within defined area of responsibility, including completion of the 6C Performance Review Process.
  5. Developing Individual training Plans to help support the needs of the business.
  6. Responsible for all aspects of resource management within defined area of responsibility, including planning, resourcing and recruitment.
  7. Manage all aspects of employee related budgets and headcount plans ensuring balance between cost efficiencies and work requirements.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Required
  1. IOSH Managing Safely.
  2. WAMITAB COTC Hazardous Waste Treatment and Transfer level 4.
  3. Experience working within waste industry most desirable, however, alternate with relevant experience will be considered.
  4. Proactive and safety focused approach.
  5. Hands on and methodical, organised with attention to detail.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Good people manager, proven experience of leading operational teams.
  8. Positive and motivated with flexible and adaptable attitude.
  9. Highly organised with the ability to prioritise effectively and to plan and manage own agenda.
  10. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop effective and positive working relationships within and outside of the department.
  11. Highly focused on delivering results and objectives with a strong personal commitment to supporting the business in achieving its goals in a changing environment.
  12. Logical in approach with the ability to analyse data and formulate action plans.
  13. Good conflict resolution skills based on a ‘Can do’ attitude.
  14. Must demonstrate high levels of integrity and adopt a professional approach in all interactions – should be transparent, open and honest in all dealings.
  15. Experience in implementing lean production.
  16. Experience in implementing kaizen in production management.
  17. Experience of asset management / maintenance.
  18. Experience of managing / implementing change control processes.
  19. Strong PC and technical knowledge and skills with a good working knowledge of the Microsoft packages including Word and Excel.
Desirable
  1. NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) as a minimum, experience with operational safety including completion of risk assessments and procedural documentation.
  2. Experience of behavioural safety / culture change.
  3. Degree level qualified (or equivalent).
