Job description

The Lead Nurse for the Thames Valley and Wessex Paediatric Critical Care ODN will provide nursing leadership across the Network, acting as a source of expertise, advice and knowledge for providers, commissioning and ICBs. You will work alongside the national PCC ODN lead nurses to deliver on nationally agreed programmes of work and to support regional surge planning for PCC capacity.

You would work with the Network Manager, Education team and Lead Clinicians as part of a multi-disciplinary leadership team to lead the strategic and operational development of coherent and effective network arrangements, and delivery of a programme of work that addresses national and local priorities, leading on user engagement and risk management. Some of the key programmes of work for the upcoming 18 months are: implementation of the PCC services specifications for Level 2, Level 3 and Transport services, working in collaboration with LTV providers to develop services alongside the NCEPOD recommendations and implementation of national Paediatric Early Warning scores.

You will also, in partnership with the ODN Education team, PIER and SORT play a key role in delivering education and training for Paediatric Critical Care across the ODN.

This role is primarily a home working role however the ability and flexibility to travel to regional and national meetings is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain clinical experience and provide expertise in the areas of Paediatric Critical Care (PCC).
  • Work collaboratively with agencies and multi-professionals regarding the pathways of care for children with long term PCC issues.
  • Develop dedicated guidance and protocols as relevant to the development of the PCC Network in collaboration with the Governance Groups.
  • Work with the network team to deliver the Paediatric Critical Care National Review and Service Specification.
  • Ensure annual review of regional surge plan is completed reflecting the current challenges to providing PCC capacity.
  • To support commissioning quality PCC services through NHSE partnership working.
  • Under the direction of the network manager, engage with a range of stakeholders to support national reviews, regional initiatives, cost and value improvements, whilst keeping abreast with new clinical innovations.
  • To be up to date with national developments, initiatives, priorities, and projects within PCC. Disseminate news and information throughout the ODN, highlighting areas where clinical networking can improve patient care and provide value for money for the NHSE.
  • Attendance and engagement with the PCCS representing the PCC ODN.
  • Lead on the TVW PCC ODN Morbidity and Mortality process ensuring learning is shared in a timely manner and any issues escalated via appropriate channels.

Clinical Focus

  • Ensure annual review of regional surge plan is completed reflecting the current challenges to providing PCC capacity.
  • Ensure that the network manager is kept informed of significant clinical issues associated with the delivery of PCC cross region alongside the PCC surge plans.
  • To support commissioning quality PCC services through NHSE partnership working.
  • Under the direction of the network manager, engage with a range of stakeholders to support national reviews, regional initiatives, cost and value improvements, whilst keeping abreast with new clinical innovations.

Patient Experience and Quality of Care
  • Work with parent/patient representatives and other health personnel to improve patients and family experience throughout their healthcare journey.
  • Work with the other ODNs to develop a patient and carer strategy.
  • Provide regular monitoring and reporting updates on the implementation of a patient and parental engagement strategy to relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide proactive support to the patient support groups that are established within the network, ensuring appropriate links with national charities and third sector organisations.
  • Adhere to the network clinical governance procedures whilst providing advice and clinical support during investigations into patient complaints where the care is across the ODN footprint.
  • Lead on the TVW PCC ODN Morbidity and Mortality process ensuring learning is shared in a timely manner and any issues escalated via appropriate channels.
  • Work with the network manager on quality and effectiveness PCC services through benchmarking and auditing the regional services against national standards and producing a plan to implement the required changes.
  • Work with all relevant organisations to ensure that the best practice models of care are embedded.
  • Participate in national/international events in order to share best practice and update your knowledge of key areas of healthcare developments.
  • Contribute to the TVW CYP ODN annual report providing statistics, key performance indicators, service and practice developments in collaboration with network manager and data analyst.

Leadership
  • Work autonomously across multiple professional, organisational and system boundaries and proactively plan, develop and sustain new partnerships and networks to influence and improve health, outcomes and healthcare delivery system.
  • Leads on research projects within the network to benefit PCC pathways.
  • Work collaboratively with the other network nurses nationally to achieve national goals and to share learning.
  • Working with the ODN Management Team, the post holder will help to deliver the service specifications and GIRFT recommendations across the Network through collaborative working with L1, L2 and L3 provider organisations and commissioners.
  • Coordinate, lead and manage the projects within the PCC workstream and support other workstreams as appropriate.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders in all acute trusts, ICB, and Specialised Commissioning across the region.
  • Provide an over-arching nurse leadership and coordination role within the network for the effective delivery of nursing care, ensuring it is responsive and flexible to patient needs for PCC.
  • To work with local trusts to build on the nursing network, providing support, advice, leadership and learning across all bands of the registered and unregistered nursing workforce.
  • Provide support for the resolution and investigation of complaints and serious incident investigations, identify risks to patient safety, and establish mitigations for issues that are of cross site concern and where joint learning could be delivered.
  • To be visible and accessible and to provide forward-thinking, clinical professional leadership to paediatric critical care staff at all levels across the region.
  • Work in collaboration with national CYP team to review CYP workforce and support the implementation of the workforce development plan.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Relevant post-registration experience in paediatric nursing within Paediatric Critical Care (L1,2 or 3)
