Band 6 Locum Occupational Therapist - Children's Therapy Services

Working Pattern: Full-Time, Monday to Friday, between 08:30 - 16:30

Contract Type: Locum / Temporary

Pay Band: Band 6

Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join the Children's Therapy Services team based at Leyland House, covering the Chorley and South Ribble areas. This community-based role focuses on delivering high-quality, child-centred therapy to a diverse paediatric caseload in a variety of settings including clinics, schools, and home environments.

The successful candidate will work with children aged approximately 3 to teenage years, presenting with a wide range of developmental, neurological, and behavioural needs. You'll be part of a supportive, multidisciplinary team, helping children reach their full potential through assessment, intervention, and family-centred support.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Manage a community-based caseload of children aged 3-teenage years with diverse and often complex needs. Deliver assessments and interventions in various settings including clinics, schools, and homes across the Chorley and South Ribble areas.
2. Conduct triage conversations with families using departmental proformas to assess suitability and urgency for occupational therapy input.
3. Use telephone consultations with parents to identify strengths, challenges, concerns, and therapy goals, and signpost to universal or targeted resources.
4. Carry out functional assessments using both standardised tools and clinical observations.
5. Contribute to environmental modifications for children with behavioural challenges to promote safety and independence.
6. Provide equipment assessments and reviews for children with neurological and genetic conditions.
7. Maintain clear and timely documentation in line with departmental and professional standards.
8. Work collaboratively with families, schools, and other professionals to provide holistic, coordinated care.

Client Group Includes:

1. Children with motor coordination difficulties (DCD, ASD, ADHD, and related co-morbidities).
2. Children with rheumatology issues impacting hand function.
3. Younger children (approx. 3-4 years) with behaviours that challenge - with a focus on safe environmental adaptations.
4. Children with neurological and genetic conditions requiring postural and equipment assessments.

Essential Requirements:

1. HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist.
2. Previous experience working within paediatric community services.
3. Strong clinical reasoning and assessment skills with children and young people.
4. Familiarity with standardised paediatric assessment tools and intervention planning.
5. Ability to work independently and manage a community caseload.
6. Excellent communication skills and experience working with families and multidisciplinary teams.
7. Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle (community travel required).
